Thoughts on Dominic? Help me think of other names for our shortlist...

So we’re due to have a little boy early next year and stuck on names for our shortlist, want a couple of options ideally.

Middle name is almost definitely going to be James and last name is two syllables beginning with P

Thoughts on Dominic as an option? I always thought it would be more popular than it is so worried there’s a reason for it’s decline!

And can you suggest any similar names for us to consider? Basically not a fan of anything too trendy and modern but also not a fan of really old style names- boy names are hard!!

Only other names I like are Charlie (already a child in the family with that name so no) and Oliver (too popular, already know about 3 babies called that so also a no)

Dominic is lovely and nick and be a Nn instead of Dom if you don't like Dom. I love this name!

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/10/2020 17:35

@Sexnotgender

I really like it, HOWEVER I can only think of Dominic Cummings right now so I took it off my list.
That was my first thought.

I have a teenage Dominic, he's a bit depressed about messrs Raab and Cummings bringing the name into disrepute, but he still likes his name Grin

In Catholic families it's the traditional name for first born son (I'm not, DH is very lapsed) but that's not why we chose it.

BeNiceLikeIRL · 07/10/2020 17:46

Knew a Dominic at Univ - he got called Dom, which my BF at the time thought was also a rude word, but I was v sheltered and never particularly understood why Confused

@Piccalily19

Ehh Id say I agree with *@Standrewsschool and @TimeStoleMyYouth* on the political namesakes, can’t imagine anyone associating the name with a forgettable politician in the future but each to their own 🤷‍♀️ Thanks to everyone for the suggestions though, some lovely ones to consider- feel free to shoot anymore over 😊
I disagree, I think Dominic Cummings will go down in history for all the wrong reasons and not be forgotten! Shame as it's a nice name.
ThatDamnScientist · 07/10/2020 17:51

Any other time I would have said, it's ok, not my favourite name but not awful!

Now? I really,really wouldn't!!!

emilybrontescorsett · 09/10/2020 05:14

Ruined by Cummings and Rabb I'm afraid.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 09/10/2020 05:20

I love the name Dominic, but then I would because I own one Grin
I agree with PPs that Benedict is a similar kind of name. So much so that a lovely older gentleman i know always calls DS it because he can't remember his actual name Grin

blueberrypie0112 · 09/10/2020 05:42

I worked with a guy named dominick.
I really like the name.

PracticingPerson · 09/10/2020 05:54

I really couldn't name a baby Dominic right now, sorry.

midsomermurderess · 09/10/2020 06:53

There is another Dominic who balances out the horrors, Dominic Grieve. Intelligent, thoughtful, gracious, lovely manners.

Doliv63 · 09/10/2020 07:00

Unfortunately I really do think that Dominic is going to be a tricky name for a while now !!
Laurence .. Great name for an adult and Laurie is a really lovely name for a child /young adult.

cptartapp · 09/10/2020 07:03

I like Dominic.
Also like Edward, Evan, Marcus, Benjamin, Elias.
We have an Adam and a Luke.

It also makes online dating very difficult. Is that his name or... something else!
twoofusburningmatches · 09/10/2020 07:19

Another who really likes the name but immediately thinks of Cummings. While I think Raab won’t be remembered much in a few years, I think Cummings’ legacy will live on - because he was absolutely vital to to leave campaign winning. His work has and will change the UK and its place in the world for the long term - it’s not exactly a short-term policy that can be overturned by the next government. And that’s before we even get into his trip to Bernard Castle and the likes.

I agree that Benedict has a similar vibe.

MikeUniformMike · 09/10/2020 07:25

As a wildcard, how about Marmaduke?

karenkanta · 09/10/2020 07:26

i am in the UK, I don’t watch tv though, I don’t watch the news or anything.

You don't need to. Simply being here would tell you who Dominic Cummings was. There was enough of threads about him. Felt like it went on forever. Unless you've just joined Mumsnet right?
