Louis or Jack?

Can’t decide! Whichever we don’t pick will probably be the middle name. Our surname is a pretty common one beginning with T.

I can’t generalise from my experience no nor can you generalise from yours

I agree, which is why I didn't. I shared my personal experience for balance. You, however, have declared very confidently that having a less common name doesn't make a person's life any easier.

I think some PP are being a bit over the top here. Jack is pretty popular yes but Louis isn’t so much and neither are on the same scale as Sarah or Laura in the 80’s. If you look at actual numbers the most popular names now would be much lower down the charts in the 80’s and 90’s as names are much more spread out now. I think Jack has been top ten for many years so I’d maybe avoid that but I don’t think you’ll be damaging him by using it! And Louis isn’t even top ten!

So said ok then I’ve heard it all now having a commen first name and a common surname never had any administrative issues so no you shouldn’t have to consider it at all. I said that based on my own experience to which I got a response of “to make your child’s life easier ok”

No not ok because that’s simply not my experience that it causes problems, Instead of taking on board that some one was sharing from personal experience that it’s NOT AN ISSUE it doesn’t make people’s lives easier or harder. I got a response “I’m right your wrong OK”

Hay we might be both outliers and their the average person with a common name and surname might fave found there was a bit of mix up between names at school and they might get a few miss directed emails at work. In fact stastics would suggest we both are yes.

So catogratoly saying “consider adminsitive purposes when naming your child” and totally generalising that people with common first and surnames have admisatrave confusion ridiculous which is what I was responding too

RizzleDrizzle · 06/10/2020 11:32

think most parents would want to make their child's life as easy as possible, and that includes finding a great and memorable name.

Really so you want to go on the threads where people are considering more unusual and memorable names and the amount of NO DONT POOR KID comments you get. Or go on the daily mail site and read some of the comments about children’s names on there

Apparently even names like cooper, Harris, alessia, Theodore Eduardo are too unque and the kid will get bullied

NotAnotherHelen · 06/10/2020 11:39

An interesting coincidence that this thread has popped up in AIBU today. Lots of people sharing experiences of administrative mix-ups, specifically regarding email.

RizzleDrizzle · 06/10/2020 11:41

In fact the biggest problem adminstively is people can’t seem to spell surnames

Person: What’s your name?
Me: Michelle Jones
Person write Michelle Stops your sure name
me: jones
Person jones... how are you spelling that?
Me J. O. N.E. S
Person oh Jones
Me: were you expecting me to spell it another way
Person: no

Yeeeeeeeppp like every other Jones! Maybe I should change my surname as it seems to be weirdly hard to spell

Houndabouttown · 06/10/2020 11:42

I mean basically all baby boys were named John at one point in time and they seem to have coped with the trauma! Pick whichever name you prefer x

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 06/10/2020 11:44

You aren't making much sense, @RizzleDrizzle, but this is obviously something that you feel strongly about. Those of us who have made suggestions have only done it out of a desire to be helpful. I really don't think it's ridiculous to choose an unusual or second middle name if you're using a popular first name.

Have a nice day.

Louis

Or go on the daily mail site and read some of the comments about children’s names on there

Am I really meant to care what Daily Mail readers think about names Hmm. I bet they'd hate my family's names Grin!

I mean I agree with you over the daily mail readers views

But I’ve seen it on here too (also I’ll say this quietly cos they’ll deny it but there’s a cross over between hear and daily mail)

The point was about the confusion of having a common name! Which isn’t confusing at sll

RizzleDrizzle · 06/10/2020 13:39

Those of us who have made suggestions have only done it out of a desire to be helpful

I made the suggestion that it’s ridiculous to consider adminstrive purposes when naming a child

Because Ir doesn’t matter there! Seriously it really doesn’t, some people don’t even go by their first names, some people go by completely unrelated nick names their entire life, I know some one who goes by the the sound letter of their first name (Eg Jay instead of James) why is this hard to understand?!?!

But apparently “to make it easier Ok” is not helpful it’s rude actually.

I don’t actually feel very strongly about it my original post was one of bemusement and amazement that any one would ever think that that was even a consideration. When naming a child

What riled me was the rude patronising reply

Bye

imissthesouth · 06/10/2020 16:34

Louis, I love it spelt like that, I think Jack is a lovely name too though, just a little more common.

ElowenSmile · 06/10/2020 18:39

Jack

I don't think it's so popular now. There isn't a single one in my 5 year old son's year group of 60

Brighterthansunflowers · 07/10/2020 12:42

Definitely jack, I really don’t like Louis

There are so many more names in use now than decades ago, that even the most common names aren’t as common as the most popular names when we were in school. A child can have a super popular name like Jack and still be the only one in his class.
