Hi everyone,
So basically i changed my dd name to the short version ( it’s a name in its own right ) I registered the ‘full’ name to begin with, however the shortening isn’t the most obvious shortening ....so we made this amendment on the birth certificate And the name she was always known hun( the short name ) is now official !
I still find this really hard 1) as I feel I got it wrong to begin with and making the ‘mistake’ and 2) having the amendment which I will have to explain to my DD later in life! Will she have to use her BC much though ?
I guess all I want from this post is supportive comments and anyone else’s own stories relating to this ...

I can’t relate but I don’t think it’s a big deal at all . It actually makes a great story that she will love hearing she’s older !

I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I used my BC (very much hoping my mother has kept it safe for me) and like PP says, its quite a good story for her to tell when shes older.

Please don’t worry. Try not to look at it as a mistake. Once you begin using a babies name in day to day life if it doesn’t sit right or suit them it’s perfectly reasonable and makes sense to change it. I don’t think it will matter as much to your DD (when you have to tell her about it) as it matters to you right now. Don’t forget this will be many years away after she has been called the new name for as long as she can remember. It will just be an interesting story and you can explain why. Once the new name is in section 17 it really won’t affect anything, all she will need her BC for is passport applications, no one else will see it. Anyone who does see it for the passport applications will be trained to know which section to take note of and see it all the time, I’m sure Smile

I got my baby a passport and have not needed to show the birth certificate since then. My mum was mad about family history and the birth certificates have all sorts of unexpected details. Lots of people use different names, middle names, nicknames. It's all okay.

I’ve never seen my birth certificate in my life is that helps and I’m 33! Assuming my mum must have it!

I don't think I've used my bc more than two or three times in my adult life and I don't even know where it is.

Assuming that the name change is something like Elizabeth changed to Lily/Betsy or Christina to Kitty/Tina the name change makes sense as it'll save the hassle of which initials to use, and it will save her having to explain that she's not E;izabeth/Liz or Christina/Chris or whavever.

My mum kind of had this in reverse - she was registered with the short form of a name (a mistake apparently - they did intend to call her by the short form but not for it to be on her BC) and she never really liked the short form so when she was 18 she legally changed it to the full version. It says the long version on her marriage certificate and and on my and my sibling's BC and it doesn't seem to have been a problem. When she died, I showed the registrar her BC and the document where she changed it, and they asked me which I would prefer on her death certificate - I went for the long version which she'd been known by all her adult life. So, long story short, it is unlikely ever to cause any more problems than having to give a brief explanation and/or show the document showing the change, and most times not even that.

Thank you all for your comments.
I guess I find it hard as I feel is unusual to change the name on the BC , And feel silly I didn’t think about the pro/con of using the long name when it would never be used!
