Clara is lovely

honkytonkheroe · 01/10/2020 18:57

I think it's a great list. I like Lara best I think.

MJMG2015 · 01/10/2020 18:58

I really like Clara.

pilates · 01/10/2020 19:02

Josephine but prefer Josie as a nn

FourPlasticRings · 01/10/2020 19:02

@custardtorte I do think Clara is more popular, but it might be my perception- Disney's adaptation of the Nutcracker caused a bit of a surge a couple years back and I see people offer it up as a name on here very frequently. I know more Claras than Laras.

custardtorte · 01/10/2020 21:58

@FourPlasticRings I'm with you! I'm not down with the Disney films or know of many little ones as this is our first. Really helpful thank you. X

Clara, or Pollyanna!

DramaAlpaca · 01/10/2020 22:04

Nora is truly frumpy and I'm not mad on Nina but the rest of your list are all nice.

Josephine is my favourite.

MercyBodle · 02/10/2020 04:34

Love:
May (only common as a middle name, fresh and sweet as a first)
Jo/Josephine
Polly

Like:
Clara

Lara is okay. I'm not a fan of Nina or Norah.

custardtorte · 02/10/2020 08:50

My thoughts except about May @MercyBodle, thank you. Also worried that Lara was plain but still love it. X

Front runners are:

Lara, Clara and May... so hard to decide

OP posts:
FourPlasticRings · 02/10/2020 09:31

I agree that May is quite fresh as a first name. I haven't ever met one. A one-syllable first name is a bold move but I daresay you'd end up elongating it for a nickname or pet name. So she could be May-see or May-bee or something. It's very cute, but I can also imagine May as a CEO.

custardtorte · 02/10/2020 10:28

@FourPlasticRings that's exactly why I love it and lots of special people in our lives have May birthdays so it feels meaningful too

I think Nina... is my fave. You don’t hear many these days. Feminine and suits every age.
Nina Jo sounds nice

TempsPerdu · 02/10/2020 12:02

Nice list OP. Definitely seems like you have a ‘style’ - simple, streamlined and feminine but unfussy.

May - definitely fresher as a first name but still lacks something for me - a bit weak/insipid? But quite nice and springlike!
Lara - lovely, my favourite
Clara - fine, love the Nutcracker association and vaguely international feel but it’s popular at the moment (I know of 3 under 5) and the Cl- sound makes it feel clunkier than Lara to me.
Jo (Josephine on bc) - Josephine is growing on me but not keen on Jo - would use Josie instead.
Nina - can’t get back the singsongy sound of it
Nora - I know lots of people love this but I just can’t see it as an attractive name
Polly - no, has a childish, nursery rhyme feel for me (Polly Put the Kettle On/Miss Polly Had a Dolly)

I’d narrow it down to Lara, Clara and May, with Lara as the clear front runner.

MikeUniformMike · 02/10/2020 12:58

May - no
Lara - yes
Clara - no
Jo (Josephine on bc) -yes
Nina - maybe
Nora - no
Polly - yes

custardtorte · 02/10/2020 12:58

Thank you @TempsPerdu that's really helpful. I love Lara and May - but do worry about plainness. We have a unique surname though so both names sit well with it. It's a difficult one.

I think Clara is now our. We've said it over and over with our surname and it does sound a bit clumsy. So down to Lara and May!

Firebird83 · 02/10/2020 14:36

Lara is much nicer than May. May is every girl’s middle name at the moment.

Doliv63 · 02/10/2020 14:37

Lara is the nicest name

finallychangedmyusername · 02/10/2020 19:31

I love your naming style - feminine but non-fussy. I absolutely love Nina, Polly, Clara and Lara. May would be really refreshing to see in the first name spot.

Jo (Josephine) is lovely too.

Not keen on Nora sorry (still Nora Batty for me).

If none of these are the name, then what about Mary, Freya, Anna, Zoe (other names I think fit your style).

custardtorte · 02/10/2020 19:35

@finallychangedmyusername you've got me to a tee! Unfortunately we can't use Mary Freya Anna or Zoe due to family member but yes you're ok the right lines!

Lara is our front runner at the moment ❤️

custardtorte · 02/10/2020 19:37

I meant on the right lines, sorry. X

I really like your list!

Polly is my all time favourite girls name. No girls in this house though!

Lara, Josephine (amazing Chris Cornell song which made me want my name to be that!) and Nora are also fab!

Luce89 · 02/10/2020 19:45

I LOVE Nina and would like to use it myself one day, but DH has already poo pooed it!

Kanaloa · 02/10/2020 19:55

All lovely names. I like Lara the best. It’s simple and nice, and feels like it would suit any type of baby, child or adult.
