I really like this name for a boy, it fits well with our surname and is one of the only boy names we love. The other is Benaiah.

It's pronounced like the "as" in "tassel". As - e - el, but more put together so it's just two syllables. However, I'm worried about there being an "ass" association even though the pronunciation doesn't sound like it, I'm aware there are different accents which would pronounce it like that. For what it's worth my partner is French but we live in England.

I feel like I'm overthinking it and there's still the 50% chance the baby is a girl.

Also like 'hassle' but without the 'h'?
Er, it's a no from me...
Would it be 'ass-eel' in French accent?
And would be shortened to 'ass' in both languages.
Please tell me this is a wind up?

RunningFromInsanity · 30/09/2020 16:02

I like it. Once you pronounce it for someone once, it’s easy to pick up. As-e-ell
Had French roots but easy for English to say.

Not all names are shortened. He would be nn ass.

(My first pronunciation was Aziel but a soft ‘z’ so not far off)

Fannybawz · 30/09/2020 16:04

He’ll be called Asshole!

KaptainKaveman · 30/09/2020 16:06

Yes it does sound unfortunately similar to arsehole.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 30/09/2020 16:06

Not keen I'm afraid, it's too much like Azreal, who is the Angel of death, aka the grim reaper!

bootiepatootie · 30/09/2020 16:07

@RunningFromInsanity

Yes, the French pronunciation is with a Z but we both prefer it with the softer sounding S instead. If you go onto Google translate English to French and type in "aciel", the French pronunciation is the one we're going for, but obviously spelt Asiel.

Just made me think of Azael - a fallen angel, and one of the namese of the devil.

AbbieFB · 30/09/2020 16:09

I like it but there will be a lot of ass/asshole jokes I’m sure. I wouldn’t use it for this reason.

averythinline · 30/09/2020 16:09

I would automatically pronounce ass zeel - coudl you not use the Az spelling that would indicate in english the shorter sound as would then say
az eel

RepeatSwan · 30/09/2020 16:10

@Fannybawz

He’ll be called Asshole!
I think this is likely, unfortunately.
peakotter · 30/09/2020 16:18

I have two primary aged sons. Everything to do with bottoms is hilarious. They would love a valid reason to run around shouting Ass in the playground. Please don’t do that to your son, or the teachers. It would be fine on an adult but not for a child.

Benaiah is a fantastic name. Interesting and unusual but with an easy shortening if he prefers.

percheron67 · 30/09/2020 16:27

A new washing powder/liquid?

Persephoned · 30/09/2020 16:34

I do say the ‘ass‘ in tassel in the same way as I’d pronounce ‘ass’ on its own so don’t understand what pronunciation you’re suggesting!

I also associate with azazel the angel - but I wouldn’t want that as a namesake - maybe look at other angel names?

Curioushorse · 30/09/2020 16:38

It’s like calling your child Satan. Bit weird!

Firebird83 · 30/09/2020 18:08

I would go with Benaiah instead.

Asiama · 30/09/2020 20:01

I would pronounce it as "ass-seal" and my first thought was fallen angel. I think your other choice would be better.

MileyWiley · 30/09/2020 20:03

Def asshole nickname coming his way
