David: lovely or awful?

I really like David for DS2 right now, and so does DH to my surprise, particularly because it matches perfectly with Samuel (DS1) IMO; the whole story in the bible about him anointing David. So is it lovely and thus we go for it, or is it just my hormones playing up?

I dont think its inevitable that a David would be called Dave. My brother is a David and was always known as such growing up.....he is still David to family and childhood friends but goes by Dave at work. That was his choice though- mid 20s at the time. Our little sister did go through a phase of calling him 'Davey Day' for a while, but it was rather sweet!

chunkyrun · 27/09/2020 21:42

Surely it's to soon for a come back

Slightlybrwnbanana · 27/09/2020 21:47

I don't teach many David's, but there have been a few and they are never ever called Dave.

Eyewhisker · 27/09/2020 21:57

Nice but dated. At my work there are loads of 50 year old Davids. It needs another 30 years before a revival.

Coffeeandaride · 27/09/2020 22:10

Lovely, it’s DS’s middle name. I have a David friend and he sometimes gets “Dave” and he corrects them.

timetest · 27/09/2020 22:11

Lovely. Will never date.

mrwalkensir · 27/09/2020 22:13

good enough for Bowie....

MrsJemimaDuck · 27/09/2020 22:14

It’s a very nice name, and I know a few Davids who never go by Dave.

TattyMcBab · 27/09/2020 22:17

I like it, would have used it myself but the surname combination was not helpful... (I’m not a Bowie though...!)

Clearthinking · 27/09/2020 22:17

Love David, just Dave reminds me of the channel which is ok to be fair

Savemyusername · 27/09/2020 22:18

Nope. Too outdated and not due a comeback.

Heartofglass12345 · 27/09/2020 22:18

I think it's nice. It's a classic name. When people say about the royle family and stuff like that they need to remember that kids won't have seen it!
I like David though not Dave. It's my dads name and my ex's name so I wouldn't use it for that reason lol

Mrsmophead · 27/09/2020 22:20

Love David. Love Dave. Solid names. I echo the view I've never met one I didn't like.

cactusdog · 27/09/2020 22:22

Lovely and classic

Nyclair · 27/09/2020 22:31

Its nice but boring

SlopesOff · 27/09/2020 22:35

I love it.
My brother was called David.

As a baby he could be Davey, not keen on Dave but I was taught as a child was to always ignore anyone that changed or shortened my name. It worked. Tell them once, then ignore until they use the full version.

3ormorecharacters · 27/09/2020 22:36

I wouldn't use it as I have some odd family members with the name, but I love the Biblical connotations and it's a good classic name. As a primary school teacher I didn't come across is at all for 7 or so years but now have taught two in the last two years (though neither from English families).

movingonup20 · 27/09/2020 22:36

Classic, I know several, done shorten some do not

3ormorecharacters · 27/09/2020 22:37

Should add that neither of my family members named David or the boys I have taught have ever been Daves - always David.

Bupkis · 27/09/2020 22:40

How could it ever be awful?!

Kanaloa · 27/09/2020 22:41

It’s quite dated but I don’t mind it. I don’t think it’s as timeless as Samuel for some reason though. I would put Samuel in the same category as Joseph, William, Thomas. David seems to fit more with Darren, Kevin and Gary. Maybe that’s just because I went to school with lots of boys with those names though! If you like it, it’s an inoffensive name which is nice enough.

paintmywholehousepink · 27/09/2020 22:41

Baby Dave.

itsjakeandamy · 27/09/2020 22:42

I'm not a fan. But I know lots of Davids who are never Dave so it certainly isn't a given that it will be shortened.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/09/2020 22:43

Hate it. Really hate Dave. Such boring, ineffectual name.

Sara2000 · 27/09/2020 22:44

Lovely name. Not so keen on Dave.
