Aaron

I'm thinking about the name Aaron for DC2, who is due in March. I would pronounce it air-run but I know lots of people pronounce it like the Scottish island (Arran). I think both pronunciations are acceptable but I wondered if you could let me know which you default to and if possible where you're from. Thank you.

Default is Arran, Essex

SionnachRua · 26/09/2020 15:33

From Ireland - Arran, always Arran.

EhUp · 26/09/2020 15:34

When it's spelt with a double A I would assume the Air-run pronunciation unless told otherwise

Aerielview · 26/09/2020 15:35

Arran. Beautiful name

MileyWiley · 26/09/2020 15:36

Arran - north west England, would also have been arran in South Yorkshire when I was growing up.

Puffalicious · 26/09/2020 15:37

Always pronounced Arran but have both Arran and Aaron spellings throughout school ( secondary teacher). I'm Scottish though so suppose that's the only pronunciation I hear. Air-ron sounds very American to my ears.

My cousin has an Arra which I quite like.

NannyR · 26/09/2020 15:38

Air-run, it's an old testament name and that's how I've always heard it pronounced in that context.

aureliacecilia · 26/09/2020 15:39

Thank you. I've been through a lot of these and it's always air-run on University Challenge but otherwise a mixed bag: youglish.com/pronounce/Aaron/english/uk

@SionnachRua my Irish friend in Ireland has an Aaron pronounced AIR-run, so not always. He's the only one I've come across who pronounces it that way, I admit.

My default pronunciation is AIR-run as I was always led to believe that's the traditional biblical way. I'm from the north of England but live in Ireland.

thistimelastweek · 26/09/2020 15:41

Always Air-run.
If you want Arran, you should spell it 'Arran'.

SeanCailleach · 26/09/2020 15:42

I'd ask.
The flip is how would people spell it when they hear it.

thistimelastweek · 26/09/2020 15:42

Forgot to say, I'm from near Arran.

eddiemairswife · 26/09/2020 15:43

Brother of Moses, pronounced 'air-on'.

ComicePear · 26/09/2020 15:47

I'm from London. Before I ever met an Aaron I would have said Air-on but now I know one, as he pronounces it Arr-on then that's what I would assume. He's Irish btw.

notso · 26/09/2020 15:51

Arun, in fact I went to school with one who spelled it that way.

NatalieH2220 · 26/09/2020 15:53

Arran, Oxfordshire

SheepandCow · 26/09/2020 15:55

From London. Always pronounced it Arran.

It's a lovely name.

Cheerybigbottom · 26/09/2020 15:59

We have an Aaron in the family and I've never heard anyone call him arran in our 40 years together. The American thing might be right though, he was called after Elvis Aaron Presley Grin

Swingbin · 26/09/2020 16:05

Really like Aaron, everyone I know says Ar-ran. Isn’t the Air-on an American thing? My cousin is called Anna but get called Arn-na by Americans.

Flashinggreen · 26/09/2020 16:10

I always thought it was Airun but no one nowadays seems to pronounce it like that, usually Arran

SoupDragon · 26/09/2020 16:12

I've always pronounced it Air-ron (South London).

AppleStars · 26/09/2020 16:12

Arran, I'm from Ireland. Have known Aarons in Scotland and Australia and all were Arran. I've only ever heard it pronounced Air-run by North Americans.

SoupDragon · 26/09/2020 16:13

I should add that I am old enough not to have been influenced by US TV programmes so it's not that it's an American pronunciation IMO.

That's the reference I know!

Air-ron is an Old Testament thing.
