Has Katy Perry made nature names naff?

Just struck me that Katy Perry calling her daughter Daisy has put me off nature names temporarily.

This isn't an attack on Katy Perry nor is it an attack on the name Daisy (which I love by the way). My own child has a nature name.

It's just that since I saw Katy Perry announce her baby Daisy, whilst wearing nail varnish with Daisy patterns on and Daisy covered blankets, it's just made me feel nature names suddenly feel ...... naff ......and I wondered if their time dominating the charts for so long is coming to an end soon. Very few people had nature names when I was at school in the 80s and 90s but they've definitely become trendy since then.

I can imagine it's not long til "Daisy Bloom" baby products and merchandise arrive with Daisy logos and things. Or maybe that's already happened.

I can see the name Daisy getting used much less now Katy Perry has chosen it. It's still on my list though so we'll see.

I have a Daisy, she’s 12 now and I still absolutely love her name! There will always be passing trends and fashions with names but if you love it go for it.

IMO Daisy is quite timeless and suits both a little girls, cool teen or successful adult.

TheVanguardSix · 26/09/2020 08:53

Katy Perry's naff! The name is fine! Daisy Bloom is actually quite lovely, considering that's the actual surname.
I knew a baby named Daisy Bee about 11-12 years ago. I loved her name. There's a 13 year old Daisy on my road. I don't think celebs can actually ruin a name.

FluffyEggsontoast · 26/09/2020 09:02

It is a lovely name @Onthecuspof40 so am not surprised to hear you still love it the name too.

Maybe I'm more thinking about picking and commodifying a child's name to become a logo and use that branding to sell baby products just feels naff to me. However I've just had a search and can't see any baby products for sale under "Daisy Bloom" yet anyway. I think I just assumed that was the way it was going after seeing the Daisy nail art and Daisy blankets and the surname being Bloom. And how so many mum Instagram stars make a fortune sellIng baby stuff online now. But I may well be completely wrong about Daisy Bloom. It is a lovely name regardless.

I think it's common for female musical stars to move onto other ventures eg Rihanna has her beauty and underwear lines, Beyoncé has Ivy Park clothing (and other stuff) Even the Kardashian/Jenners haven't released merchandise with their minor children's names plastered on them.

mediumperiperi · 26/09/2020 09:17

Daisy Bloom sounds like a Marc Jacobs perfume

XiCi · 26/09/2020 09:25

I cant imagine Katy Perry for a second will release a range of baby products using her baby name. Doesnt really fit with her profile. Also Daisy hasnt been a popular name for about 10 years now. All the Daisy's I know are 10-13 years old. Dont hear of it much now.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 26/09/2020 09:28

No, she hasn't.

Auto · 26/09/2020 09:46

No I don't think so. Nature and nature names have been around much longer than KP.

FluffyEggsontoast · 26/09/2020 09:54

Yes good point @XiCi
Think I'm being silly.

Although Ivy Park I suppose is technically named after her daughter (Beyoncé), but I see the above point.

Daisy is lovely. I used to think that it was only a name for a little blonde three year old with a blue smocked dress... but then I met an amazingly cool 35 year old lawyer called Daisy who rocks!

Not sure if Katy Perry is still relevant anyway but agree merch is on its way Grin

Not that it makes much sense to do so, but I tend to separate out nature names from flower names. Flower names are pretty, been used for ever and will continue to be so. Nature names are becoming very popular. You would not be able to guess a Daisy or Rosie's date of birth, but Wren is the grey kitchen of the future.
The minute a name is used by someone famous, that gives it a connection you may or may not appreciate, but it doesn't instantly make your choice naff. It is more naff to use the name because the famous person did I think.

FluffyEggsontoast · 26/09/2020 10:09

@Itwasaquarterpast11 yes I saw that since Binky (a reality TV star with a pretty massive online following) named her daughter India a few years back, since then the name India has declined in numbers every year since Binky used it. I think people assume that a celeb using a name will make it mega popular (and occasionally it does - Harper!) but often people go the other way and decide not to use the name anymore.
Since Stacey Solomon used the name Rex, the growth of numbers in the name totally stalled.
I recon Daisy's numbers will continue to fall after Katy using it. Which is a shame as it's a great name I think

In the nicest way possible OP I’d like to say don’t be daft Grin as others have said she’s not going to take it that far. She was just excited about her daughter and since Daisy’s are pretty it will have made sense to have daisy decorated items.

Everyone will move onto the next baby news and forget about Daisy Bloom (again, in the nicest way possible).

For instance, it’s not often you hear about Apple anymore.

FluffyEggsontoast · 26/09/2020 10:48

@DoTheMaccaroni haha yes point taken.

Don't tell anyone but I actually quite like the name Apple too.

I think names like India have probably declined due to being perceived as generally problematic rather than because of Binky, tbf. I cringe whenever I hear of a child called that.

It didn't occur to me that KP was likely to be flogging those products, I imagine the nail art and blanket etc were more of a photo op for the classic "just born hand hold" shot, rather than something she's likely to start selling.

Daisy has been consistently in the 20s/30s in terms of popularity for a while, it isn't an unusual name like some of the other celebrity names that have gone on to decline so I wouldn't expect this to impact it's popularity massively.

As a side note, they really lucked out with the Bloom surname!

RuthW · 26/09/2020 12:04

Daisy is really popular here at the moment but then again it was popular 23 years ago when I had dd

Swingbin · 26/09/2020 15:58

No because Daisy is very mainstream, people will already have a lot of other associations to it. Jaime Oliver called his one Daisy Boo quite a while ago now and it didn’t put people off.

mediumperiperi · 26/09/2020 16:07

It will be interesting to see what Eugenie picks for her dc when they are born next year.

mediumperiperi · 26/09/2020 16:09

I think it's mainly reality stars and influencers flogging merchandise with their kids names and image.
Considering that she was pretty private about her pregnancy, I suspect we'll only see Daisy Bloom everywhere if she decides to become a model, actress or pop star.

Kanaloa · 26/09/2020 16:22

I’m not keen on Daisy Bloom because it sounds a bit like a character rather than a person - along the same lines as North West. I like the name Daisy though, and I think of Downton Abbey before Katy Perry, so I don’t think it’s tainted the name, or nature names generally. I think most people wouldn’t immediately think of Katy Perry.

mrsnec · 26/09/2020 16:30

I agree it's about how it sounds with the surname and it could be a good brand but I'm not sure about the daisy nails thing being a bit dodgy.

My daughter has a nature inspired name (although it's not obvious to people who don't know the origins. ) If I see something that depicts her name I can't resist buying it. My DM and MIL are the same. It's normal isn't it?

SumAndSubstance · 26/09/2020 18:03

I think flower names, while obviously being nature names, are a subset with quite a different vibe. They’re relatively old school, whereas when you say nature names, I think more of things like River, Leaf, Fox, Ocean and Bear.
