Blake for a girl??

What do you think of Blake for a girl as it’s quite well known as a boys name! Not sure whether it sounds a bit too ‘masculine’ and confusing as a girls name?

What are your honest opinions on Blake Margot/Margaux?

or maybe the other way round and stick Blake in the middle? Thank you x

When people talk about unisex names, it generally only goes one way - boy names being used for girls. This article explains why this trend is problematic:

Margot is beautiful. Blake is (1) male or (2) Surname.

What would your DD think of having what is known as a boy's name? Can you imagine the taunts in the playground? Margot is a good name. Don't spell it Margaux because that's a wine. It would be like caking your child Chardonnay. Apologies to anyone who has.

daisypond · 25/09/2020 11:03

Not keen on Blake. It’s a surname.
Margot is nice. Definitely not Margaux. It’s a wine.

ShellsAndSunrises · 25/09/2020 11:03

It’s my middle name. It creates much amusement when people find out. Endless Blake Seven comments, did your parents want a boy... it’s bizarre. People also tend to say it weirdly. It sounds very different in different accents and some people put weird inflection on it.

Generally I avoid telling anyone what it is and just use B if I need a middle name, but I wouldn’t. My husband suggested using it as a kids name, it was a strong no from me.

Sadly Blake Lively didn’t make it any better, although she’s gorgeous and awesome and I hoped she would!

Not keen on Blake for boy or girl.

mummy2myJJ · 25/09/2020 13:02

It's on my list for either girl or boy, I love it! I think if I was to have a girl i would maybe consider Blakey as it's slightly more feminine in my opinion xx

mummy2myJJ · 25/09/2020 13:02

*Blakely... damn autocorrect lol x

Candyflosscookie · 25/09/2020 13:08

Blake Lively gets away with having a boys name as she's gorgeous, successful and a superstar. Your average kid who has to go through school (in the UK? (I'm assuming UK here, maybe if you're in the US/Canada it would be different) - big fat nope from me sorry.

Margot is fine.

Margaux makes me think of the wine. And Villager Jim's Labrador on Facebook.

Cherrylipbalm · 25/09/2020 13:23

MN never fails....as I sit in my (ex) council flat and of course sit here being really 'chavvy' Grin
It's such a shame a useful forum is so full of judgement

MikeUniformMike · 25/09/2020 14:51

I'd think Blake was a boy.
Margaux is awful and I'm not keen on Margot.

Blake is a celebrity-inspired name for a girl. Same with Margot.

merryhouse · 25/09/2020 14:56

(a) No.

(b) I've always found Margot particularly ugly, but I'm well aware I'm in a minority on this one.

SodaPerson · 25/09/2020 15:19

I'm going to be honest, don't do it...

Blake sounds like an 80's male action movie characters name.

RoSEbuds6 · 25/09/2020 15:20

I feel a bit sorry for anyone reading this thread with a Margot or a Blake - you need the hide of a rhino to post on here!

RayOfSunshine2013 · 25/09/2020 15:22

Margot... just reminds me of the tiktok.. “I don’t know who’s Margot”

I also don’t like the name Blake, however it’s not my child.

SodaPerson · 25/09/2020 15:25

Yes and no.

My 1st flat was fine, it was a private development built in 1940's...quite posh. No chavs, as you had to have a certain amount of income to rent or buy there.

My next flat, I rented in a private block of flats (built around 2017), and there were plenty of chavs due to the socially affordable housing part of the block, where a large fraction of the occupants caused a lot of trouble and ruined it for everyone who lived in the entire block (social and full rent).

I would be never let myself or anyone I know buy or rent a flat which has a socially affordable housing section/allocation.

SodaPerson · 25/09/2020 15:27

@fantasmasgoria1

Iiminthesouth, please don't generalise in regards to council estates. In my experience "chavs" and people similar are not confined to council estates. I live on a private estates and there are plenty of what you call "chavs".

What you will see on here is what people will be thinking when they say 'Oh that's a lovely name' to your face.

Margot makes me think of Margo Leadbetter, and Blake of Blake Morrison.

You probably think Blake Lively and Margot Robbie.

Mamette · 25/09/2020 15:27

Not Margaux. It looks like the plural of something.

Margot is nice. What about Margaret? Too soon? I know a little Margie and I presume she is Margaret, she’s cute.

Blake- I would think Blake Lively. Or Amy Winehouse’s “Blakey”.

MikeUniformMike · 25/09/2020 15:38

The thing with the celebrity name is when the person who inspired it is beautiful but the name often isn't.

Audrey - do you think dinner lady name from your schooldays or do you think Breakfast at Tiffany
Marilyn - checkout assistant or Norma Jean
Grace - Kelly or granny name
Darcey - ballerina or bratty schoolmate of your DC
Doris - Day or your nan.

AdoreTheBeach · 25/09/2020 16:08

If you’re in to young boys babes for girls it trying to be gender neutral, my all means use Blake. Blake Lively is popular now but may not always be so in the future so don’t count on that connection forever. I think you’ll find Blake as a mans name to be more familiar / popular. But hey, I know a lady named Kevin (Not trans).

Margot however is a timeless name that everyone should be able to pronounce and spell. If you go for Margaux, be prepared to see Margot written.
