Noah and Isla

anonymous1989 · 12/09/2020 20:32

Spent alot of time browsing the forum but never been brave enough to post.
I have a 5 year old called Noah.
We are expecting another little bundle of joy. We haven't found out the sex yet, but we intend to do so.
Popularity isn't a major concern for us. We choose names we like regardless of popularity.

We have a boys name set in stone but we are unsure of a girls name. The girls name we loved has been used by a friend. No animosity, her baby was born first and we don't own the name. Please don't say use the name anyway, we don't feel comfortable with this.

I have been thinking about the name Isla. The meaning of Island in Spanish and Scottish appeals to me.

But I'm worried Noah and Isla might be too similar sounding. What do you think? Should I be concerned about this? Also, what do you think of the name Isla? Please make comment based upon the name itself rather than focusing on the "too popular" comments which are frequently seen on here for any top 100 name. Thanks.

Both names are fine. I wouldn't choose them because of overuse, but you are ok with the popularity.
Does it go with the surname?

As regards meaning, it is nicer than Ennis(girl), but Innes (boy) is nice.

BikeRunSki · 12/09/2020 20:43

I think they are fine together, but you could use Ailsa if you think they are too similar. Similar meaning (in the Scottish connection anyway).

BillysMyBunny · 12/09/2020 20:44

I think the name Isla is very pretty, the fact it’s popular takes the shine off it a bit for me but as that isn’t an issue for you I think it’s a lovely choice. I don’t think it’s too similar to Noah, although the endings are similar the initial and vowel sounds are different enough. No one would bat an eye-kid at siblings called Harry and Alfie or Charlie and Molly etc so think if the beginnings are different sharing the end sound is fine.

Isadora2007 · 12/09/2020 20:44

A bit too same-y for me with the ah sounds at the end sorry.

EggyPegg · 12/09/2020 20:45

I like them together. I know a sibling pair named Noah and Iris so it reminds me of them

Whatsyourflava · 12/09/2020 20:52

I like Noah and Isla together! Great pair.

If not..... if it's the "I" sound you like how about Imogen

If it's the "a" ending how about Nina or Willa or Martha or Delilah or Cora

Ferrylass · 12/09/2020 20:57

I have an Isla and absolutely love the name!
When we picked it it was the most popular name in our area (we're in Scotland), she's now five and we've only ever come across one other Isla!
I think Noah and Isla are lovely together 😊

anonymous1989 · 12/09/2020 21:15

@MikeUniformMike Yes it does go well with the surname.
@BillysMyBunny Thank you for the reassurance regarding the matchiness. Been practising saying both names together throughout the day and they seem to roll off the tongue nicely.
@Whatsyourflava Thank you. Im afraid none of the names you suggested really appeal to me. Sorry.
@Ferrylass Thank you. That is very reassuring to hear. Noah is meant to be hugely popular but we've only met 3 or 4 in a variety of different settings since my son was born. So its all relative I think.

I think they sound fine together, and I love the name Isla. Popularity hasn't taken the shine off it for me, I still think it's such a lovely name (and slightly regret not using it myself!)

twirlywooly · 13/09/2020 08:10

Lovely name and I think they both go really well together actually. Had Isla on my list but a friend got there first unfortunately. Loved the idea of Izzy as a potential nn.

DoTheMaccaroni · 13/09/2020 09:00

The fine together. Nothing exciting (to me) but definitely the type of names I expect to hear as a sibset these days.

anonymous1989 · 13/09/2020 09:14

Thank you all.
The other names we have been considering are Jemima, Juliet and Isabel. We have some reservations about Jemima and Juliet given they are relatively uncommon compared to Noah.

Whatsyourflava · 13/09/2020 09:19

I like Jemima best of your other options. I don't like Juliet as it'll get shortened to Jules. Isabel also nice.
I'd stick with Isla or Jemima. Both sound lovely with Noah

MikeUniformMike · 13/09/2020 11:23

Jemima, Juliet - both much nicer than Isla, and I like Jemima enough to have considered using it. Juliet looses points because I don't like Jules or the way some say it as Jullie Ette
Isabel - lovely amnd classic but I don't like Izzy, and there are so many Isabels, Isabelles and Isabellas.

I would choose Jemima, without any doubt.

spiderlight · 13/09/2020 11:25

I think they go together beautifully. Isla is gorgeous.

len1234 · 13/09/2020 11:28

I think they go well together and Isla is beautiful.

len1234 · 13/09/2020 11:31

I really like Juliet. Isabel and Jemima are also nice.

anonymous1989 · 13/09/2020 14:53

@Whatsyourflava and @MikeUniformMike
My only concern regarding Jemima, is will she inevitably become Jem?
Juliet I'm worried about the "where is romeo" thing.
Really like Isabel but not keen on Issy/Izzy. Would like to use Isabel as far as possible.
Hence why I drifted more towards Isla as its less likely to to be shortened.

Anyone else have any opinions?

MochaTime · 13/09/2020 17:10

I think Noah and Isla are lovely together.
Are you looking for other options? If not, feel free to ignore my suggestions: Freya, Alanna, Cora

Thethingswedoforlove · 13/09/2020 17:17

Noah and Isla work really well together. Isla is a great choice.

Thistlegirl4 · 13/09/2020 17:18

I think Noah and Isla sound lovely together.

Glitterheart · 13/09/2020 17:19

I think Isla and Noah sound great. I have an Isla and a Clara and had similar reservations but we’ve had lots of comments on how well the names go together. Much more important to go with the name you love the most!

yevans · 13/09/2020 17:21

Skye or Iona are more Scottish island girl's names you could use but I really like Isla!

MikeUniformMike · 13/09/2020 17:24

There is that with Jemima, but I quite like Jem, @anonymous1989, but Mima is awful.

You can shorted Isabel to Isbel in speech, like if I say Elizabeth quickly it is just Lizbeth.

Isla will prob be I or Isle. This is where half of MN disagrees with me and start posting that their Isla never gets her name shortened but I know some Ians shortened to E.

Juliet could shorten to Jet, at a push.
