What do people do with regard to names that are shortened... e.g. Charles on BC but known as Charlie day to day, Frederick known as Freddie, Elizabeth known as Beth etc?

They're registered with their full name obviously, but just tell the teacher what they are known by. We've never had an issue.

PotteringAlong · 09/09/2020 22:07

What do you mean? When they go to school? You put their proper name on the form and then there is usually a “known as” box when you fill in the paperwork for them actually attending the school.

EuphieKat · 10/09/2020 02:12

My son is ‘officially’ Harrison, but he’s on all his school registers as Harri.

Lebkuchenlovers · 10/09/2020 08:00

You put their proper name on the forms!

Their friends or teachers can shorten them if they like but there's no need to.

I don't understand this 'planning' of shortenings for perfectly lovely names.

Lebkuchenlovers · 10/09/2020 08:01

Your child will probably want his GCSE result documents etc on his proper name?

LolaSmiles · 10/09/2020 08:14

They are registered in their full name and then we call them what they'd prefer. At the start of each year I ask my classes if they'd rather have a shortened version. My register only shows their full name.

Not all information systems put the 'known as' name on the register and sometimes it can only be found by searching each child's record to check. I find it quicker to ask.

Poppydaisies · 10/09/2020 09:00

Register the 'proper' name. Then use a nickname among friends.

TheChristmasPrincess · 10/09/2020 17:24

Some application forms have a “known as” box. If not you could maybe even write that down somewhere on the application form. If not, I’m sure the teacher will ask what they prefer or the child can tell the teacher and classmates their preference.

grafittiartist · 10/09/2020 17:27

As someone who never uses their complicated full name- I make sure that I always use it on forms. It gets so difficult when you start to use nicknames - then documents don't match up.
Always go for full name IMO

Every management information system I’ve used in secondary schools has had a ‘known as’ field for the register.

@Lebkuchenlovers Exam certificates are issued in the student’s legal name. Shortenings used for ‘known as’ names aren’t relevant.

Ours must be set up odd then.
I've had several situations where a child is called Muhammad as a first name but goes by their middle name, or has an Asian name as their first name but they go by an anglicised name and they register never shows it.

LadyCatStark · 10/09/2020 20:08

As others have said there’s a “known as” box on the registration form. DS has just started high school and all his online things are registered as his shortened name, I haven’t seen the register of course. He says he is teachers refer to him by his shortened name and he names his own books.

It’s important though that if you definitely want your child to be known as their short name, you put it in the “known as” box, especially for high school as some ban nicknames 🤷‍♀️.

Flappingflamingo · 10/09/2020 21:24

My daughter Isabel has just started high school she's always been known as Izzy /Isabel so asked what she prefers, she said Izzy. Apparently all school registers and teachers have her down as that. Sam happened with my son, he's Samuel, always Sam. But I have no doubt they're exam certificates will be in their full names

Flappingflamingo · 10/09/2020 21:25
  • same happened and their 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
toomanypillows · 10/09/2020 21:30

Students on my register come up with their "known as" name - so it says Sam not Samuel for eg. When I go into an individual student's file from the register, it shows the full name.
