Sammy or Sammie?

Which is more masculine?

Is there one that is more common for a boy or a girl?

Thank you

Sam would be the obvious nickname.

Pinkshrimp · 09/09/2020 08:45

Sam.
Both Sammy and Sammie seem more feminine.

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/09/2020 08:45

"ie" is more feminine IMO but neither are really "masculine". The more common abbreviation would be Sam.

Grufallosfriends · 09/09/2020 08:46

I don't like Sammy/Sammie at all. I'd shorten to Sam, if at all.

Why are you planning a nickname? They develop naturally.

itsjakeandamy · 09/09/2020 08:46

Sammy is more masculine than Sammie because - notwithstanding all the Alfie/Archie/Freddies out there - ie is traditionally a more feminine ending.
But Sam is much nicer to me.
I know a couple of teenagers whose parents still call them Sammy and Joshie and I do find it a bit twee.

Grufallosfriends · 09/09/2020 08:47

I know a Samuel who never shortens his name. It's easy enough to say.

Grufallosfriends · 09/09/2020 08:48

Sammy looks wrong.

Brighterthansunflowers · 09/09/2020 08:55

Sam

lorn195 · 09/09/2020 08:57

Definitely Sam. My 18 year old isn't keen on being called Samuel, he even had a name badge changed to Sam.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/09/2020 09:00

I think Sammy is ok for a toddler/small child. But Sam as they get older.

Daftasabroom · 09/09/2020 09:04

Sam.

Unseeliequeen · 09/09/2020 09:05

Sam.

Sammy or Sammie are fine when the LO is little. If you're texting a family member about your 2yo son Sam you will probably quite naturally refer to him as Sam, Sammy, Sambam etc because he's a cute little squish.
But I don't think Sammy is a good teen or adult boys name. Most nicknames people use for little family members tend to fade out as the kid gets old.

Flappingflamingo · 09/09/2020 09:13

Used to call my son sammy when he was younger but now as a 15 Yr old he's Sam, think his mates would take the mick out of him if we called him sammy now

Firebird83 · 09/09/2020 09:47

I intended to call mine Sammy when he was little, but he’s always been Sam.

BikeRunSki · 09/09/2020 09:50

Mine is mostly Sam, but sometimes Sammy by his GM. Also Sambino, Peapod and various other NN not related to his first name.

Although at 12, Y7, he prefers Samuel.

Jessiexx80 · 09/09/2020 10:01

My 13 yr old has always gone by Sam, although I do sometimes call him Sammy as an affectionate nickname. If anyone calls him Samuel, corrects them to Sam

AriettyHomily · 09/09/2020 11:56

Sam

MikeUniformMike · 09/09/2020 12:58

Sammie looks wrong.

Sam or Sammy are fine.

VenusClapTrap · 09/09/2020 13:12

I have a female cat called Sammy and everyone thinks she’s male because of her name.

Dilbertian · 09/09/2020 14:43

I knew an adult Sammy and he was a great guy. We were both in our late 20s at the time.

Sammy used to be a normal nickname for Samuel, and not uncommon among adults, but it's fallen out of fashion now. Like Mummy and Daddy, -y endings for boys' names have mostly been relegated to infancy.

BikeRunSki · 09/09/2020 15:27

I know an adult Sami, short for Bassam. He’s Turkish. I think the Syrian refugee in “Home” is Sami/Bassam too.

MikeUniformMike · 09/09/2020 19:18

Sami is an arabic name.

MikeUniformMike · 09/09/2020 19:20

The Sams/Sammys/Samis I know are all quite masculine.

insancerre · 09/09/2020 19:22

I have an adult Samuel, he has always been Sam, never Sammy
