Thoughts on this? If shortened would probably go with Nina...

I know I know it's not the done thing to discuss shortenings on MN but it happens anyway in my family and they tend to stick, so I may as well pre-empt it 🤪

Love it but I've never heard Nina as a nickname, Trina is what I would be used to.

ApolloandDaphne · 06/09/2020 18:02

I have a Katrina. When she was younger her little sister called her Nina as she couldn't say Katrina but it didn't stick. As an adult she his now known as Kat although I call her Trina sometimes. If you don't like Cat then beware as that is likely what she will become as a teenager!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 06/09/2020 18:04

I like it, I went to school with a lovely one and then taught another lovely one in my first year of teaching so it has entirely positive connotations! Agree that she's almost inevitably going to become "Cat" as a teen though.

badg3r · 06/09/2020 18:07

Thanks! Yes I do like cat, but I don't think we will get it because we are not in the UK. I worked with one on in England who always used to get called ca-tree-oh-na which I think would irritate me a bit though.

I really like it, I think of it as a Scottish name.

FelicityPike · 06/09/2020 18:09

Pronounced Katrina or Cat-ree-Ona?
Either way a good strong Scottish name.

ApolloandDaphne · 06/09/2020 18:12

We like Catriona but didn't go with to because of the Ca-tree-oh-na pronunciation. In fact the Scottish pronunciation of Catriona is actually not pronounced like Katrina either. It is more nuanced, like this.

NellyJames · 06/09/2020 18:18

It’s nice. I work with a Catriona and she’s told me she’s spent her whole life telling people her name isn’t Cat-ree-ona. That surprised me as it doesn’t seem that unusual to me and I’ve never heard of anyone actually called Cat-ree-ona.

badg3r · 06/09/2020 18:23

Are you in England @NellyJames? I was the only person at work who said her name properly... 🤦🏻‍♀️

Love it. Kitty is a nice shortened name

WildfirePonie · 06/09/2020 18:37

I don't know, sounds a bit like.. Corona

How do you pronounce it?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 06/09/2020 18:40

Go for it. My son’s name is Dimitri, nickname Dave. 😒

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 06/09/2020 18:42

Ah, yes, the one I taught was pleasantly surprised that I knew how to say her name. She'd spent a lot of years telling her teachers it wasn't Cat-re-oh-na

Spidey66 · 06/09/2020 18:44

I like it.

Yes I like it, it's a pretty common name where I am.

Another pronunciation is Cat-RO-na, which I'm not so keen on.

Boireannachlaidir · 06/09/2020 18:58

Like it but never heard of it being shortened to Nina.

Oneandabean · 06/09/2020 19:25

I’ve never seen it spelt like that so I’d say it cat-ree-ona. Only seen catrina or Katrina.

Nina doesn’t really sound like an obvious nn but if you like it it’ll stick I’m sure.

NellyJames · 06/09/2020 19:55

Never heard of Nina and the Neurons? She’s Catriona.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2020 19:56

It's spelled Catriona or Caitriona in Ireland. It's pronounced similarly to Katrina but not quite, you sort of glide over the 'o' sound, it's there but very subtle. It's a nice name, quite old fashioned though.

I was at school in England with a Catriona so I know how to say it. Lots of teachers didn't and it used to annoy her when they constantly got it wrong.

Grufallosfriends · 06/09/2020 19:57

Pronounced Cat-ree-Ona?

I can't see how Nina would be an obvious nickname?!

florascotia2 · 06/09/2020 19:57

Sorry, but that forvo clip just sounds American to me. Where I live - West Highlands - Catriona quite a popular name, especially among older people, and they say Kat-REE-nah or Kat REE-uh-nuh . If the latter option, the 'uh' is hardly voiced at all; the two syllables are run together.

Insane bordering on racist. Mocking other languages is not a good look.

Grufallosfriends · 06/09/2020 19:59

Confused
NellyJames · 06/09/2020 19:59

@badg3r, yes I’m in England. But I’m sure I’ve seen and heard it many times. I certainly knew to pronounce it properly and I was surprised at how delighted she was at this.

NellyJames · 06/09/2020 20:00

@Grufallosfriends, no it’s pronounced ‘Katrina’.
