*Genoveva
*
It is the Spanish equivalent of Genevieve which I love. DH is British and I'm Spanish. While we do think we'll end up spending most of our time in the UK, we do travel to Spain multiple times a year.

I would love using Genevieve but I have realised it doesn't sound as nice and gentle when said in an authentic Spanish accent. However, I really am liking Genoveva which sounds lovely but I'm not sure how it would go in the UK.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

I like it. I'd pronounce it Ge no VEH va.

I also like Geneviève but worry that it would be mispronunced in the UK.

Bringmewineandcake · 06/09/2020 17:04

How would it be pronounced?

I'm struggling to understand what the difference would be between the 2 names, other than the final sound.

countrysidehills · 06/09/2020 17:29

Genoveva - Heh-noh-veh-vah

I don't mind the G not having the H sound in the UK though. I would find that easier to live with than the way Genevieve has been butchered by some of my family members (He-neh-vee-eh-veh)

I really like it. Could be shortened to Jen in the uk, would that bother you?

danascully96 · 06/09/2020 18:55

I prefer Genevieve as it's a fav of mine and Genoveva is just unfamiliar, so I can't wrap my head around pronunciation.

ArnoldBee · 06/09/2020 19:13

The end just reminded me of vulva but that's just me.

MimiSunshine · 06/09/2020 19:18

I think you have to find a completely different name.

I can’t see many if any in the UK not mangling Genoveva and if you’re family mangle Genevieve then neither will work

Lavenderblues · 06/09/2020 19:38

It's easy to pronounce: Ge noh VEH va.

Much easier for English speakers than Geneviève.
Ge ne VEE ev.

Lavenderblues · 06/09/2020 19:39

Genoveva is much easier to p pronounce than Geneviève.

TwizzledTurkey · 06/09/2020 19:45

It sounds a bit like the place in The princess diary films - Think that was called Genovia? Sorry that’s what I made me think of, I personally much prefer Genevieve

Bringmewineandcake · 06/09/2020 19:49

Could you call her Genevieve but just let your Spanish relatives pronounce it like Genoveva?

I can see either name getting mispronounced all the time, which is a shame because I already like Genevieve and now I like Genoveva now you've explained how it's pronounced.

Grufallosfriends · 06/09/2020 19:53

Geneviève is pronounced Je ne vee ev with 4 syllables. The emphasis is on the last syllable.

Genoveva has a much easier imo. Je no veh va with the emphasis on the third syllable.

Grufallosfriends · 06/09/2020 19:55

What? They're completely different names HmmShock

Elouera · 06/09/2020 20:00

For some reason, I too thought of vulva!

Viletta · 07/09/2020 02:58

In my mind Genevieve is the correct spelling however indeed it won't be pronounced with H. The name sounds French to me and would be pronounced with G. It's a beautiful name though. What would you like to use as a short version?

GemmeFatale · 08/09/2020 20:07

I think it’s lovely. Frankly why wouldn’t you use a name you love that reflects her heritage?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 08/09/2020 20:16

Genevieve (no accent) has an anglicised pronunciation: JEN uh veev. Be warned that most people’s sight-reading stab at Genoveva in England will likely come out as jen oh vee va.

DipSwimSwoosh · 08/09/2020 20:20

It seems a strange choice in the UK for a Spanish speaker, as the G and the V are pronounced so differently in Spanish and English.
I have always found Genevieve an awkward name. Partly because most English speakers find it hard to get right. All the vowels and syllables and emphasis in different places.
I think Genoveva is easier, but still strange for English ears. Heno-beyba is not a common sound at all when it comes to names.

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 22:40

I'd say Jen oh VEH va.

Bananarana · 08/09/2020 22:41

I also don't like how English speakers pronounce Geneviève.

I think Genoveva is easier.

micc · 09/09/2020 07:04

I love it! Again it did make me think of princess diaries Haha, but I watched it about 100 times as a child and it's a very out of date reference.. not even a bad one! With the pronunciation I would say jen-oh-ve-a.. but if you corrected me I wouldn't forget. I think its beautiful. Again nn I would automatically say Jen. I know someone called Amalie, she said lots of people in the UK say am-a-Lee but its a-mar-Lee. But I have never know her as anything different.

IAmAMother23 · 10/09/2020 01:06

I think that name is complete shit. Your kid will be bullied. Angry

ILoveStickers · 10/09/2020 06:15

Genoveva is lovely. As long as you're happy with it being pronounced with a G, it's great.
