Naming a Sibling

We recently found out we were expecting DC2. I still have the very long list of baby names from my first pregnancy.

I just want to know how people went about naming child number 2. Did the name of your first "set the trend" and therefore dictated what you named your second (or third). Did you just pick your next favourite names from the original list or did your list change completely?

I picked my next favourite name. They do still go together but they would only rhyme etc if they was twins.

I'm due twins and have started from scratch as our name preferences have changed a bit since DD1 - it felt like the list of names shortlist we had was specific to her and so new babies deserve new names

One I really like for another DD isn't 'special' enough compared to her DD1's. I think they have to be on a level ie. not more sophisticated, frilly, special, unusual than each other if that makes sense?

Carouselfish · 04/09/2020 11:19

*my not her DD1s

We ended up naming our DD1 a name that was on our list but it wasn't the top contender during the pregnancy.

I have a slight regret over not using the other two names I loved (although they were slightly fashionable which is what put me off at the time) and I am debating if I want to use them should we have another DD or whether I feel like they belong to the previous pregnancy like PP says.

I could just be massively overthinking and letting pregnancy hormones get the better of me Hmm

I haven’t thought about whether this babies name works with my DD, as they’re individual people I do t understand the need for them to match it some way. I’m just looking for names both me and my partner like.

We only ever had one name for our first and never considered any others!

Second took a lot more discussion and deliberation and in the end we couldn't decide until we saw her. We chose her name just a few hours after she was born.

It was quite important to me that the second child's name went well with the first child's name though, I know that's not the case for everyone!

We had different names short listed for each child. Like we had about three contenders ahd they felt like they belonged to that child if that makes sense. And when the next came a long we reconsidered names on our list but didn't feel the shortlisted names felt right.

DS2's name is one I really love, but which didn't suit DS1. It was briefly considered for DS1's middle name but we decided to keep it for a second boy instead. I'm very glad we had another boy so I got to use it!

The name don't need to go together, but it might seem strange if they are wildly different.
It's probably best if they aren't matchy matchy (Holly and Ivy, Rose and Lily, Milly and Molly).
Usually the names of sibling are of the same sort of type (think Sarah and Emma not Cordelia and Destiny-Rae)

mistermagpie · 04/09/2020 22:02

We picked our next favourite name but they are very much a 'set' - both quite obvious Scottish boys names.

When we had a third child I was all tied in knots trying to think of a similar Scottish name and just didn't like any! In then end this baby was a girl and we just gave her a name we liked. Almost everyone commented that we hadnt given her a 'good Scottish name' though!

scrivette · 04/09/2020 22:06

Our first DC had an unusual name so I wanted to keep with that 'theme'.
