Is this actually a really terrible name? I kind of see it as sort of like Edith, Eliza etc that generation but it never hits the charts, only once in the past 20 years. Why?

Wonder if I’m missing something, it’s said as spelled, it’s in a well known book and a fairly positive, strong character. Why is nobody using it? Anyone enlighten me?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My DD is called Marilla. She is 11 and has never been called Gorilla or Vanilla. She goes by Milla or Rilla to her friends; Millsie to her sister and Millie-moo-chops to her mum Wink

I personally think it's a fab name. Easy to pronounce but different enough that you rarely meet another marilla (and when you do, they are always fabulous hip peeps!!) We live in Canada and no-one has ever related the name to Anne of Green Gables - which could just mean Canadians don't read their own PR material Smile

Anyway obviously I AM biased (because my marilla is gorgeous) but I think you should give it a shot!!

Sorry just re-read OP and realised your DD is already called Marilla - what can I say apart from....you clearly have excellent taste Wink

Immediately thought of Anne and got a warm glow.
Whilst it's not a name I would choose, it is beautiful.

Ritascornershop · 29/05/2021 05:46

A friend of mine’s very posh mum was Matilda. We liked her, but could not resist calling her The Gorilla.

Ritascornershop · 29/05/2021 05:48

Sorry! Bloody autocorrect. She was Marilla the Gorilla.

stillcrazyafterall · 29/05/2021 06:34

I've never heard of it and I'm a very well read woman, but not Anne of Green gables! I like it!

stillcrazyafterall · 29/05/2021 06:36

I've just realised that if you pronounce it with the Spanish 'll' (y) it is Maria. So if she doesn't like it when older she can call herself the Spanish version Smile

Marilla1966 · 29/05/2021 07:44

I like it 😀x

lavenderandwisteria · 29/05/2021 07:45

I like the full name but I’m not keen on Rilla, sorry. But it’s definitely a good literary name!

wizzler · 29/05/2021 08:15

I love it. I don't think it's an old lady name. I think it's pretty.

starrynight21 · 29/05/2021 08:17

I have an aunt called Myrilla. I think it's nice.

Happycat1212 · 29/05/2021 22:37

Made me think of gorilla sorry 🦍

HeadlessGummyBears · 01/06/2021 09:45

I think it’s great! Brew

bridgetreilly · 01/06/2021 12:00

It's lovely and I don't know why it isn't more popular.

Anystarinthesky · 01/06/2021 12:41

Sorry, my first thought was Marilla the Gorilla.

Historytoo · 01/06/2021 13:17

Lovely, lovely name.
