It's finally happened...70s and 80s names, are they back...?

The people I was at school with in the 80s are making a come back! I have just heard of a couple (East London based and both quite arty/trendy) who are friends of friends and they have called their baby girl... Lisa.

There were several Lisas in my school so it was really popular (Lisa Marie Presley probably had something to do with that).

Now I think about it I guess it is quite a nice name; short, not too cutesy with its A ending rather than an IE or Y... What names have you heard recently that have surprised you?

Lisa has been falling pretty much each and every year for about the last 25 years

Oh please no, Claires, Kirstys, Joannes or Helens noooooo.

Prettybluepigeons · 31/08/2020 14:21

Clare and helen are both lovely names. Much better than some of the horrible granny names that get bandied about on here like ivy and Aggie and shit

MinnieMousse · 31/08/2020 14:27

I taught a 10 year old Lisa a few years ago. I think it's a nice name that you will see occasionally but I don't think 70s/80s names are due a comeback yet. I think some 50s/60s names will have a resurgence first - Deborah, Jacqueline, Angela etc. My DD7 insists that one of her future DC will be called Pamela after reading the Secret Seven Grin.

Freetodowhatiwant · 31/08/2020 14:59

Yes when you think of it Lisa, Claire, Helen, Kirsty, Joanne, Amanda, Louise.. are all nice sounding names. We are just so used to hearing them they have become boring to our ears.

@Prettybluepigeons yes when I was little we hated those granny names then funnily enough grew to like them later.

I do also like the 50s and 60s ones - Deborah, Jacqueline, Angela. Carol is a lovely name! They've just been ruined for us.

A 10 year old Lisa sounds quite cute @MinnieMousse

Please no Joannes, Kellys, Lisas or Samanthas.

FourTeaFallOut · 31/08/2020 15:27

It would be nice to turn the tide on all the cutesy delicate names that sound like you'd blow over in a strong wind.

IKEA888 · 31/08/2020 15:27

Yup.. I work on children's health care and routine screening.
Lots of Brian's... Gordon's..and I have spotted a....... Sharon!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 31/08/2020 15:29

My 13 year old has a Susan in his form. Lovely name!

Freetodowhatiwant · 31/08/2020 15:44

I agree about the cutesy names FourTea. At least the Lisas, Joannes, Susans etc are quite strong and not too cutesy.

But I draw the line at Brian and Gordon IKEA!

When I was about 7/8 Sharon and Tracy (because they were slightly older than me) were definitely the names I wanted to call my own children. Thinking about them, separating them from their later incarnations, they are both actually really nice names! Sharon in particular is quite lovely sounding. What a shame I am not having any more children and can't be a trailblazer and have a Sharon.

I like Lisa and think it will definitely make a comeback at some point but I think your acquaintances are probably ahead of the curve.

Freetodowhatiwant · 31/08/2020 15:50

Yes I think they are quite brave in that sense. If one can be brave in terms of naming a child! At least it's not completely 'out there' weird or made up.

Oh dear, my name is not liked on here GrinBlush

TheSultanofPingu · 31/08/2020 15:53
Grin
Freetodowhatiwant · 31/08/2020 16:20

What? I LOVE Pingu :)

Seriously though, your name is probably about to become really trendy...

I love the name Helen!

I can’t imagine looking down at a baby and calling her Laura, Kirsty, Lisa or Louise.

One of those names is my own! I hate it. But I do love Helen - a strong beautiful name.

So does that mean it’s the end of Ava and Isla?

Freetodowhatiwant · 31/08/2020 16:35

I have never really thought about it before, always finding Helen a bit boring compared to say, Helena, but actually you're right it IS actually a very lovely name.

Ava and Isla seem to be ever popular. I reckon the revolution starts in small corners (like this East London couple with Lisa) and gradually ripples out.

I wonder what boys names will go along with these.

I COULD probably look down at a little baby and call it Laura, Kirsty, Lisa or Louise. I don't think I could go as far as Barry, Gary, Kevin or Wayne Grin.

Well I’ll be listening out for baby Kylie and baby Sharon!

Boys names - Kevin, Jason, Simon?

Sunrise85 · 31/08/2020 16:39

Ahh cross posted!

Wayne and Shane GrinGrin

We’ve basically named my entire primary school class in this thread!

Freetodowhatiwant · 31/08/2020 16:41

ha! Casting back my mind to school the boys I hung out with were Daniel, James, John, David...not too hideous and certainly not along the lines of Wayne, Shane, Gary...

Don't forget Lee, Steve, Karen and David.

finallychangedmyusername · 31/08/2020 16:50

I have a (terrible) 80s name (not yet mentioned on this thread) which I hope will never resurge.

I find Kirsty and Lindsey interesting, and Claire, Laura and Louise are beautiful and timeless. Sarah and Rebecca, which admittedly were somewhat overused in my generation, are strong and beautiful Biblical names (as is Sharon actually).

I'd love to see a baby Sarah. It'd be so refreshing amongst all the Islas, Amelias and Evies/Evas/Avas of today.

For boys I love find Andrew, Anthony, Simon, Jonathan and Christopher very handsome.

Love the name Barry. My first mega crush was a Barry. He was gorgeous, curtains and all.

Prettybluepigeons · 31/08/2020 19:04

I know two primary aged Alans
