Robert or Edward?

Which of these names do mumsnetters prefer? The rest of the name will be Samuel Joseph Wilson. Something within me makes me think Robert flows better with the names as a whole, but I would still like to hear what others think. Thanks Smile

Edward - I find all the short forms for Robert a bit naff - Rob, Bob, Bobby - just a bit middle-aged man.

FizzyGreenWater · 01/09/2020 14:22

Also with Robert his initals would be RSJ Wilson, which sounds like a brilliant building firm Grin

yikesanotherbooboo · 01/09/2020 14:34

I like Bob so would go for Robert. I like Edward but am less keen on the diminutives. Both are good names though, I am being picky.

BeMorePacific · 01/09/2020 15:25

Edward 100% 😍

moonriver32 · 01/09/2020 16:05

I like that Robert is not so popular nowadays, it's a good classic name that doesn't get used do much now. However I'm not keen on the potential nicknames of Robbie or Rob. Bertie I like!

Edward is another classic that is just lovely - but there are more little Edwards than little Roberts.. Depends if that's something that bothers you!

If it were me, with your other names I'd go Edward Samuel Joseph Wilson Smile

As a name I prefer Edward, but Robert flows better.

Toowit · 01/09/2020 16:23

Robert.

cptartapp · 01/09/2020 16:38

Edward in its entirety. No contrived nn. Robert just seems a bit 70's/80's to me.

Carouselfish · 01/09/2020 19:51

Robert. Nicer all round, better shortenings too.

PrincessLouis · 03/09/2020 19:51

Robert is an underused classic. The world is drowning in little Teddys, Neds etc

KeepSmiling89 · 03/09/2020 19:53

Robert...but I'm biased as that's DHs name.

Not a massive fan of Edward.

micc · 03/09/2020 22:16

I prefer Robert.. both have great nns though! Bobby is really cute

Astronica · 04/09/2020 00:02

I love Edward and prefer it over Robert. However Robert is okay and for me it would come down to how they sound with the surname and which if any short forms would mostly be used.
I think Robert sounds better with your surname than Edward, but Ted or Eddy for instance sound great with Wilson and I prefer them over Robbie. Both work well with the middle names.

AlwaysLatte · 04/09/2020 00:08

Edward is nice, Eddie is lovely. Robert was my grandfathers name and it's also my mother's name. I like that too.

Fozzleyplum · 04/09/2020 00:14

I like both. As far as the short versions go, I like only Bob for Robert, and only Ted or Ned (but not if in Scotland!) for Edward. Not at all keen on Rob/ Robbie, or Teddy.

EriAndo · 04/09/2020 00:47

Both are a little dated IMO - very 80s and Ed, Eddie, Rob, Robbie, Bob, Bobby are a bit meh...
I really like Samuel Joseph as a name though...
