Caelan?? Struggling to agree on names, I like more unusual but DP is much more traditional. He is willing to consider some of my suggestions though.
I've seen that Caelan can be a girls or boys name, is it too girly for a boy? Any other Irish suggestions welcome but looking for a bit more unusual than Declan, Kieran etc Smile

I love Caelan and it is on our list. Also love Coinneach and Callan (some of the names we like are Irish Gaelic, some Scots Gaelic)

I've known several but they've always been pronounced with the Cae to rhyme with eye and the lan as in land.

Mumof3almost4 · 31/08/2020 11:07

Think I'm leaning towards Kale-an spelt Caolán.
DP may have other ideas altogether 😂 it's so hard when you have such different tastes!

But Caolán would be Kale-AWN (or Quail- AWN).

Hi op , if you leave out the fada over the a you'll have the correct spelling for the pronunciation you like.
By having the fada over the a you are elongating the sound to Kale awn (as in fawn).

Mumof3almost4 · 31/08/2020 11:47

Ok thank you, no fada.

Learnt here on another thread yesterday that 'á' is pronounced differently in Ulster Irish, thus Caolán is pronounced as Keelan there, I THINK. No awn sound, but not the Kale sound you want either OP. I'd get that confirmed first though; I don't speak the Ulster dialect. I agree in Munster and Connacht 'án' makes an 'awn' sound.
So possible options for you are
Caolan = Kale-an (somewhat anglicised version)
or Caolán = Keelan (possible Ulster Irish pronunciation, but, NB check this first!!)
I take it you want to avoid the Caolán = Quail-awn pronunciation.
@CerealBeacon
Also agree that in Munster Caoilfhionn isn't said as Keelin in Irish (though I think there's a bit more of an ee sound in caoil vs caol, kweelin, sort of?) The one I know here happens to prefer the Keelin pronunciation though, so she just uses that.

Loads of ideas on there. Im irish and hate the name Tadhg but mainly cos its my neighbours kids name and ALL we ever hear is her roaring down the road in her best Dublin accent for him to come in for his dinner. Think 'Tie-iggggggggg come in for yer dinnerrrrrrrrrrrrr' at the top of her voice.

Scottishflower · 31/08/2020 21:21

Cillian is my favourite. X
