Emily... yay or nay?

Thoughts?

Thanks all. Seems overall that Emily has gained positive responses!

My favourite names which I can’t use are: Anna and Catherine .

I prefer traditional and classic names, that have a classy/smart/elegant/strong vibe.

Not sure if Emily fits that criteria? DH is really pushing Emily as it’s his granny’s name who he adored.

I know several Emily's, a few in their teens and some younger. Quite a popular name in dcs school.

(Regarding Elsie, I hate that name. I had a great aunt Elsie and it just makes me think of old ladies with bristly moustaches in flowery house coats)

Chickenitalia · 25/08/2020 11:33

I know loads ranging from early 30s to toddler age.
It’s a nice enough name, but over used here.
Please don’t spell it differently though, if you do use it. That’s even worse. Emilee, Emma-Leigh, Emerlie have all made me wince.
Doubt you’ll get any criticism or raised eyebrows over it tbh.

Spidey66 · 25/08/2020 11:34

I like it. It's one of those names you can imagine for a baby or an older person. Timeless I suppose is what I mean. For some reason I prefer it to Emma, even though they're similar.

Whatsyourflava · 25/08/2020 12:11

Emily is definitely in the same bracket as Anna and Catherine @Dillydallier

A great choice!

daisypond · 25/08/2020 12:17

I don’t think Emily does fit the same bracket as Anna or Catherine. It’s a more modern name. It has elements of dreary and downtrodden to me. Anna and Catherine are a lot classier, more elegant and stronger, more international names. Emma is better, though personally I’m not wild about that either.

emmathedilemma · 25/08/2020 12:19

yay, classic.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 25/08/2020 12:35

Emily is lovely.
When I was pregnant, my sister mentioned that her favourite girl's name was Emily. Although I liked it very much, I felt we couldn't possibly use it for that reason. As things turned out, DSis didn't have a daughter.
One of my DD's friends is an Emily but she's known as Em.

ilikebooksandplants · 25/08/2020 12:36

I quite like it. I don’t know anyone called Emily and it sounds quite pretty and girlie without being ridiculous in my opinion. Really like the name Anna too (also pretty and girlie but sophisticated!).

Thegirlhasnoname · 25/08/2020 12:41

I’m an Emily and have never heard anybody call it dull in real life 😂

That being said I’m in my late twenties and the only other Emily I have met is one from a baby group when DD was born in 2018

Fishfingersandwichplease · 25/08/2020 12:45

Love it

Dillydallier · 25/08/2020 13:05

@Thegirlhasnoname do you like your name? Are you happy with it?

OP posts:
midsomermurderess · 25/08/2020 13:08

I don't like it. I think it's dull and quite feeble. And also speaks to a lack of real engagement in naming your child. Sure, you don't have to be whacky, but it's like Susan and Janet in the middle of last century. Beige essentially.

FlowerTink · 25/08/2020 13:09

Emily is lovely! One of DD's friends is an Emily and I really like it - its a classic name.

Enko · 25/08/2020 13:16

nay from me. It's as dull as Jane Imo

Thegirlhasnoname · 25/08/2020 13:16
@Thegirlhasnoname do you like your name? Are you happy with it?
I quite like my name and am having a good giggle at people saying it is a dull and feeble name 😂 I get it is all personal opinions but if I had to think of a dull and feeble name it would not be Emily (it would be Keith but as you’re expecting a baby girl that isn’t relevant!!)

I like that it isn’t overly girly but is still feminine. I think it’s a pretty solid name

hellswelshy · 25/08/2020 13:16

Dull and feeble? How rude. It can't be that feeble, seeing as though the name continues in popularity. And as for 'a lack of engagement in naming your child' - really? I think you are being a bit goady pp.

Enko · 25/08/2020 13:17

@Thegirlhasnoname I am one who finds Emily a very dull name. However, I also have manners and I am able to have nice polite conversations. So even if the name is one I really detest I would never say " yuck" or "dull" My children have marmite names and I am often surprised by how rude some people can be. I think they are beautiful names as does my dh and really that is all that matters.

milienhaus · 25/08/2020 13:21

I’m an Emily (late 20s) - I like it but there were 7 Emily’s in my year at school so I got used to being one of a crowd!

Dillydallier · 25/08/2020 13:23

@midsomermurderess I have to disagree about Janet and Susan! I would say those are “fad” names that were super popular for a decade and lost its popularity, perhaps like Rachel and Jennifer? Maybe today’s Isla? I think Emily is more like Sophie...which has decades of popularity, as well as similar names being popular like Sophia/Emilia.

Lavenderblues · 25/08/2020 13:35

Dull and overused. I know so so many Emilys (and Amelies, Emilias etc).

Yes, beige would be a good description as a colour.

There's so many beautiful and more memorable names out there!

Lavenderblues · 25/08/2020 13:37

Dull and feeble? How rude

It's not rude. The op asked for honest opinions!

Dillydallier · 25/08/2020 13:40

I do understand what the “dull” comments are insinuating. I’ll have to have a think about it and see if it bothers me. But I am happy with the “classic and timeless” comments too

OP posts:
bumblenbean · 25/08/2020 13:40

‘Lack of engagement’ in choosing name?! 😂 ok PP if you say so. I’ll stick with my classic name choice and leave others to use the whacky ‘out there’ names.

As I’ve said before, most classic names are popular because people like them. It may not be ‘original’ or unique but to be honest I find attempts to be massively original more cringe. Each to their own 🤷🏻‍♀️

Grufallosfriends · 25/08/2020 13:40

Sorry but I also find Emily incredibly dull and 'blah' because I just know too many. I think it was THE top girls name for a number of years, so there must be thousands of them out there.
