James or Jamie

Just wondering what people would put on BC if they were planning on using the name Jamie day to day. Do you consider it a nn of James or name that should be used fully in its own right? And thoughts on both names as well I guess!

Definitely James.

James

They feel like completely different names to me, so if going by Jamie I’d put that on the birth certificate

They are the same name! One is a nn for the other. If you name him James he has the option of using it when he's an adult with an important job, if he needs a bit of gravitas, although you can call him Jaime all the time.

If you name him Jaime he won't have that option.

CoffeeRunner · 20/08/2020 07:40

I agree that the two feel like different names. That said, James is a much nicer namer in my opinion so I would put that on the birth certificate.

James

I would definitely go with James as you give him the choice. When he is older he can be James, Jamie, Jim, Jimmy, Jay.... if you officially call him Jamie then he'll be limited just to Jamie!

remainin · 20/08/2020 07:50

My nephew's name is James but he's called Jamie "for short".

remainin · 20/08/2020 07:51

My dad's name is James but goes by Jim.

Erictheavocado · 20/08/2020 07:54

@Jessabean
I've pm'd you.
I notice that I was right about something I predicted in my message! Didn't take long.

ittooshallpass · 20/08/2020 08:03

Definitely James. Jamie sounds very babyish to me - fine when he's a baby, not so fine as an adult.

Ellmau · 20/08/2020 08:03

James with Jamie as nn.

zebrapig · 20/08/2020 08:27

I may be controversial here but we went for Jamie. James never featured for us, maybe because Jamie is a family name but we both love it. NN here are Jim or Jimbob. He mostly refers to himself as Jimbob so clearly we use that most!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 20/08/2020 08:32

I have a Jamie. Much prefer it to the name James, James just reminds me of an old man ( my papa) who everyone called Jimmy.
I also know a couple of adult Jamie's. Suits them fine, doesn't sound babyish Hmm

MadamShazam · 20/08/2020 08:32

I love both but my preference would be Jamie.

nutkin7 · 20/08/2020 08:34

Jamie! I think it works very well for baby and adult and is a name in its own right, not just a non.

elfran · 20/08/2020 08:35

To me they are different names - I know several of each, but have never met a James who went by Jamie. If you want to call him Jamie I'd put that on the BC, it's a legit name in its own right and I certainly don't think it sounds childish - all of the ones I know are grown men who seem to be getting on ok with it.

That said, I prefer James as a name, but it's not my baby.

nutkin7 · 20/08/2020 08:35

NN that was supposed to say, not non!

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 20/08/2020 08:36

James is better.

Jessabean · 20/08/2020 09:04

Thank you all for the replies. Seems quite divided schools of thought. Thought I'd get opinions as I although I'm usually an advocate for going for the longer formal name on BC and use nn day to day felt like Jamie does feel like a separate and respectable enough name in its own right compared to others comparisons and wasn't sure if it would seem a bit silly to have James on the BC bit using Jamie day to day. Do you think there is a difference geographically across UK is Jamie Vs James more popular in Scotland Vs England?

palmsandwine · 20/08/2020 09:40

Definitely James.

My brother is James but was called Jamie from a couple of months old. It wasn't planned, just kind of happened. He's 32 now and he always said once he reached adulthood he'd switch to James. He hasn't. Still Jamie and it still suits him but I definitely think he likes having the option of being James as/when he wants to be.

Greywind1523 · 20/08/2020 09:47

I think it’s one that is recognised as a name in its own right but I’d still use James to give him the option later in life if he wants it.

Another thing that might put me off is my friend Jamie who now lives in the US says that anybody he meets without speaking first on the phone assumes he will be female. I think he might have switched to James by now if it was on his birth certificate.

Jessabean · 20/08/2020 09:49

@Greywind1523 thats a good point forgot Jamie is more popular as girl name in US- think it might be same in Australia?
