Élyséen

Not pregnant or TTC but found this name through a mother of three children. The two oldest used to appear on a South Korean reality show called The Return of Superman but (back in December) went on a hiatus because their mother was pregnant and she had a baby boy in January which she named Élyséen. I think it's lovely. Pronounced like the word elysian.

The other two are Eden (girl) and Aciel (boy). What do you think of these names?

I think it sounds too close to Alison.

veryyellowtulips · 18/08/2020 22:57

It's alright I guess. I wouldn't choose it unless I had a French background though.

Miljea · 18/08/2020 23:08

Call your child Elysian, then.

StCharlotte · 18/08/2020 23:21

It's all a bit try-hard in my (humble) opinion.

Although I have recently come across an adult Acelin which is growing on me. I'd love to know where it came from.

StCharlotte · 18/08/2020 23:26

Oh no. I've looked it up . It's French (nice) but it's pronounced Arsaleen.

whatausername · 19/08/2020 00:15

Very try hard but the kids are on a reality tv show so hardly surprising.

tenlittlecygnets · 19/08/2020 00:19

Eden is nice. The others? Not so much. Especially if you live on a council estate in Bradford or similar. Very ... out of place. How will people pronounce them?

florascotia2 · 19/08/2020 11:04

The official residence of the French president is called the Elysee Palace. Elyseen (sorry, can't do accents) is an adjective that refers to that, or to the Elysian Fields of mythology, or to a posh street (Champs Elysee) named after them, in Paris.

As I'm sure you know, the Elysian Fields were part of the Greek/Roman Underworld, the eternal home of dead people who had led virtuous lives.

So it's a bit like calling a child either 'happy afterlife' or 'from the president's palace/ belonging to a posh street'.

But their baby, their choice.

zyx9000sekai · 27/01/2021 15:02

Did their mother create this name herself?

KirstenBlest · 27/01/2021 17:19

Eden (girl) - downmarket
Aciel (boy) - Arsy 'ell
Elyseen (with accents) - dreadful.

Madamfrog · 27/01/2021 17:40

Elyséen is just the French for the adjective Elysian. Not used as a name in France, just a word.
We do have the name Elisée which is Elisha the OT prophet.

loeylieee · 12/09/2021 11:19

What does it mean Élyséen or Élyséenne?

Basically she's called her children Heaven. (Paradise and Sky are both close enough...)

I agree for anglophones it would be better simply to use Elysian - and hope nobody calls them Elision instead Grin

loeylieee · 12/09/2021 12:36

I remember they (followers)was said that the meaning of the name is sky

Or a sort of Macron tribute. Grin

@StCharlotte, it is definitely not pronounced Arsaleen or anything remotely like it.

It's just a French adjective, equivalent to calling your DD Heavenly (without the Hiraani Tigerlily bit). I don't quite take to it as it sounds to me like Elizianne (a mash up of Eliza/beth and Anne)

Eden is a boys name to me (though I kniwnit started being used for girls in the 1980s following it being given to a female character in a US daytime soap. But it still sounds wrong to me for a girl.

I don't really take to Aciel either - what is its origins? I would guess French, something like 'skywards'?

loeylieee · 12/09/2021 13:03

ciel means sky in french, his mother added "a" as a vowel

I was going to say, surely it's just the adjective of Elysée. I worked with an Elysia years ago who was also named after the Elysian Fields myth. Of course she just spent her whole life going "no, not Eliza, no not Alisha, no not Alyssa" etc.
