Thoughts on Meryl for a girl?

Obviously there’s Meryl Streep (not a bad association), and I’ve known one other Meryl who would be in her 20s or 30s now, so I always assumed it was a medium popular name. But searching for figures online it seems almost completely unused. Weird as I think it’s quite pretty. I wonder why it’s not come back with the recent old lady name resurgence?

Meryl Streep's name is a nickname. Her given names are Mary Louise - Meryl is a mash-up of them.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/08/2020 18:15

I’ve only known one Meryl I was at school with, so mid 50’s now. Apart from Meryl Streep that’s it.

I think it’s very now actually, I’d use it. One of those names people are looking for, a bit old fashioned, but it has a contemporary feel.

DrDetriment · 16/08/2020 18:17

Not one I like I'm afraid. In the same camp as Beryl and Sheryl.

Todaywewilldobetter · 16/08/2020 18:18

Isn't there an Osmond too? Male.
It's just not a good name to say out loud.

StrikingMatches · 16/08/2020 18:19

I've met both a female and a male Meryl. Female in her 40s and bloke in his early 60s.

Ikeameatballs · 16/08/2020 18:23

I like it!

I also like Mariel, from Muriel’s Wedding.

Snarkastic · 16/08/2020 18:23

There's a League of Gentlemen running sketch (senior ladies running a charity shop) where the punchline is 'that Meryl!' so for that reason alone I'd avoid it - not sure that many people would be familiar though.

Whatsyourflava · 16/08/2020 18:33

Beryl and Sheryl are just so awful I'm so sorry
I agree @DrDetriment
Puts me off Meryl
Any others on the list OP

UntamedShrew · 16/08/2020 18:39

If you like it go for it! You’ll be shouting it upstairs and across parks for years Grin

I also like the name Meryn, which is still unusual but a bit more widely used than Meryl

IndiaPlace · 16/08/2020 19:54

Liking Marcie, rather than Meryl.

MikeUniformMike · 16/08/2020 19:59

Meryl is fine.

How about Merle?

mathanxiety · 16/08/2020 20:02

Merle is a male name.

I agree Meryl is in the Beryl and Sheryl camp.

Merryn is much nicer.

RiteAid · 16/08/2020 20:21

I think it’s really pretty.

Knittedfairies · 16/08/2020 20:35

I like it!

ClaraLane · 16/08/2020 20:36

I love Meryl! I used to watch The Royal when it was on TV back in the day and there was a Meryl in that. I’ve only ever met one in real life so I say go for it.

BrokenBrit · 16/08/2020 20:36

It’s ok but I prefer Merryn too.

CoddledAsAMommet · 16/08/2020 20:38

I love it, Meryl was on my shortlist and got to the top 3, though we didn't use it in the end. Dd was due on Christmas Day and we thought 'Merry' would make a cute nickname. It's unusual, though everyone will have heard of it so no pronunciation issues. And easy to spell!

Immigrantsong · 16/08/2020 20:39

I like it.

@mathanxiety,en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merle_Oberon

IKEA888 · 16/08/2020 20:42

love it

mathanxiety · 16/08/2020 20:46

@MikeUniformMike - Merle Haggard is probably the most famous bearer of the name.

guineapig1 · 16/08/2020 20:47

I like it! I’m in west Wales and know at least 8 Meryls - all between 30 and 45ish plus a few older ones. I’m struggling to think of any under about 30 though

SpeedofaSloth · 16/08/2020 21:10

Not keen TBH.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 16/08/2020 21:17

Big yes from me!

FingersXssd83 · 16/08/2020 21:57

Gosh I haven't ever thought of that name but I really like it!
