Baby boy name - modern and international

We are expecting our first DC and will find our the gender soon.
We decided very quickly on the girl name - both in love with name Lara.
However we really struggle with boy name, although everyone thinks I'm having a boy...

As I'm not British we want the name that is easy to pronounce abroad.

We want something modern, not super sophisticated or tacky, similar vibe to Lara, but we can't agree on the name... My DH son from his previous relationship is called Leo and love this name but obviously can't use it. Any ideas?

DH ideas:

  • Lewis
  • Hugo
  • Sebastian
  • Logan
  • Robin

My list:

  • Arlo
  • Franco
  • Kai
  • River
  • Alex
  • Adam
  • Zachary

Any suggestions?

Lewis - Luis?
Hugo - H isn't sounded in many languages
Sebastian - ok but spelling in other languages?
Logan - no
Robin - not sure

My list:
Arlo - don't like it
Franco - General Franco
Kai - downmarket vibe
River - not sure if it works in English
Alex - fine
Adam - fine
Zachary - not sure if it would work internationally

Jasper - not sure if it would work internationally
Max - fine
Peter - not in France
Rory - not if you can't say R
Isaac - is pronounced eesak in many countries

Laurence is a girl's name in France.
Laurie will get Lowry (like the painter)

How about Philip, Matteo or Andreas

Where are you from and what is your mother tongue?

Most of the names on your list are very English but I would expect that you'd want something that works in your language too (assuming it's not English).

"International" is way too vague!

Lorenzo

International to me would mean a name that is unlikely to cause any spelling or pronunciation issues in most countries. e.g. Bob, Ann, Luca

It could also mean names that are spelt the same but pronounced slightly differently e.g. Robert, Richard, Paul, Anne.

NameChange30 · 16/08/2020 16:49

But Mike you are assuming that "international" means "European" and even then, there are some European languages with different alphabets.

Standrewsschool · 16/08/2020 17:20

International boys names I think of are-
Nicolas
Erik
Karl
Philip/filip
Luca
George/Georgio
Alexander

Just realised, I automatically think of Royal names from both the UK and abroad.

MikeUniformMike · 16/08/2020 17:29

I mean will work in the standard latin Alphabet.

Theo would work but Théo wouldn't.

MikeUniformMike · 16/08/2020 18:10

I wasn't particularly thinking european, but if it works in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German , Portuguese, there's a fair chance that it will work in most of europe , north america, central and south america, australasia, much of Africa, possibly Asia.

Using names from other alphabets can result in strange transliteration.

NameChange30 · 16/08/2020 18:13

Yet again this assumption that European countries and languages will be relevant everywhere.

On mumsnet, it's likely people will be British or European, but you could at least consider the possibility of other nationalities and languages! And no, European languages will not be relevant in every other country!

Anyway, I will stop now, sorry for the derail OP. I bet after all that, you're probably French or something Grin

MikeUniformMike · 16/08/2020 18:14

You should not say that I am assuming, @NameChange30.

A friend gave her DC an international name. He is called Adam.
The name isn't an european name. The DC isn't strictly european, as he is British-born to parents originally from North Africa. The name is of semitic origin.

Chinese friends gave their children English names with chinese middle names.

Another north african friend gave her children names that are perfectly usable in this country but are distinctly arabic. Similarly, a Pakistani-British friend gave her children arabic names - they work but they are muslim names.
