-ara names...

I have always loved the -ara sound / names for girls;

Cara, Lara, Mara, Tara, Zara...

I am leaning toward Zara, as my long-term love, but is the Royal connection too obvious? Someone said they thought it dated though I would rather say classy.

Such a big decision - any thoughts / preferences?

I think Zara is lovely and don’t think the Royal connection is too strong at all. Especially not amongst children who likely will have no idea, unless the royal family is often discussed in the household.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/08/2020 16:56

I have a Kara so I am biased.

TinyMetalBirds · 13/08/2020 16:58

I don’t associate Zara with Royalty at all, but that is possibly because I had a Zara in my class at school in the 80s so for me it is on a par with Leanne, Kirsty, Samantha and Danielle, some of the other names in the class.
Lara on the other hand is one of my favourite names ever. Love it.

Viennasienna · 13/08/2020 17:15

Tamara? I like this name.

Viennasienna · 13/08/2020 17:16

Clara is my favourite though

Melabela10 · 13/08/2020 17:25

I like Zara. Majority wont even know the royal connection (Zara) and would rather associate it with the closing brand. Also, i met a few muslim girls called Zara and always thought its muslim baby name. Just googled the origin of it and apparently its variation of Hebrew Sarah or Arabic Zahra!

EarlGreyJenny · 13/08/2020 17:42

Def not too royal. It's a beautiful name and I also love -ara names. I have a Lara and I still love it after many years.

DramaAlpaca · 13/08/2020 18:42

I love Zara and Tara, the others not so much.

I really don't like Mara, it's a south American rodent.

I don't think Zara is too royal. I'm old enough to remember Princess Anne having to seek the Queen's permission to use it for her daughter, it caused a bit of a stir at the time.

Flynn999 · 13/08/2020 19:14

I wouldn’t necessarily automatically associated Zara with the royal family.

Your D.C. would in theory be going to school with George’s, charlottes, Williams, Louis, archie’s, charlie’s all of who have a higher royal profile.

Also Zara always seem quite normal and not massively in the public eye.

FizzyGreenWater · 13/08/2020 19:23

Love Zara. I wouldn't think royal, but if you did, it would be one of the best of the bunch as in very non-royal vibe.

FizzyGreenWater · 13/08/2020 19:24

Also, funny how these names have certain letters and not others.

Why not:

Bara
Fara
Hara
Jara
Nara
Para
Wara
Yara?

I love Zara. I wouldn’t say there was a royal connection. There are plenty of Zaras out there. All the Royals have regular names, don’t they eg Anne George Charlotte. Granted Zara is a bit more unusual but I don’t think it’ll make people automatically think of the Royal family.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/08/2020 19:31

More suggestions.

Farrah.
Amara.
Dara.
Cara.

chipsandgin · 13/08/2020 19:32

Lara or Clara are both lovely.

Enderman · 13/08/2020 20:11

I know a Zahra (It’s said the same) and the royal connection has never occurred to me.

I love Clara.

BathTangle · 13/08/2020 20:21

What about Shara? (Like Shara Proctor, the Olympic long jumper)
I loved Damara, but DH vetoed it saying it sounded too much like Demerara sugar!

Mandalayblonde · 13/08/2020 21:39

I like Shara too! Thank you.

I like Cara. And Carla.

Farrah?

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 14/08/2020 13:06

I love Zara, Farrah and Clara.

There are things like Amara, Elara, Dilara as well, but more syllables obviously.
