Do you consider race in your suggestions?

I enjoying looking at the baby name boards but very rarely comment!
I’m always surprised that usually people don’t mention race or ethnic background. Do you assume the baby is the same as you? Caucasian? Another background? Does it make no difference to your suggestions?

Yes I definitely do!
People can be very quick to judge names, but so often it’s very heavily dependent on race, culture etc. What is seen as “odd” for a Caucasian person may be seen as beautiful for another culture. I think it’s important to pay attention to it and also important not to culturally appropriate names.

I assume that all the posts are Caucasian despite being South Asian myself. If I was going to post I would definitely point out my ethnic background and my religion bc I would want to receive suggestions of names that people like that fit into those backgrounds. I love names like Penelope (Nell) or Alexander (Alec) but have struggled to find names like that that translate into my cultural background. If I was going to post, I would definitely have to mention my cultural background bc otherwise people would see that I like Penelope and Alexander and carry on suggesting English names.

(Any suggestions btw Wink)

I've seen plenty of threads where the OP states the ethnic background of the DC. It makes a difference to what I would suggest.

It strikes me as strange to give a baby a name that is from a different language, race or culture, if there is no connection.
Having said that, I can think of people who have done so.
Examples are parents who have given their children indian names because they went travelling in India, an
Indian father (practising Hindu) and british mum who have a son with a punjabi first name.

I find the current trend for non-Christian parents to give OT names to their sons, although the mainstream OT names seem fine, which sort of doesn't make sense. Why would David be OK but Ezekiel not?

Often the names are dated in the original culture, and they get mispronounced , and become mainstream.(Carys - definiitely in the same league as Carol and Karen)

I always cringe a bit when seeing people still using the term 'caucasian'

i don't understand the point you are making. i can understand you want us to know south asian, and to have names that fit somehow, although unless we share/know well that background how will we know the names. but how does that relate to the penelope/ alexander likes. good name by the way, that one.
MikeUniformMike · 13/08/2020 19:37

What should we use instead of caucasian?

EasynowPatrick · 14/08/2020 12:43

@Ishcia I didn’t really know what word to use. I was looking for a word that would cover the white majority in this country specifically, rather than other people with white skin. People seem to have understood my meaning by their responses.
I hope I haven’t caused any offence to anyone, that wasn’t my intention.

@alexdgr8 more to show that I like long names with nicknames and then hopefully people would suggest names like that that fit into my cultural background if I posted
