Me and DH recently discovered the name kitty and thought it could be an option for our DD. Any thoughts??

Lovely name. And for goodness sake, put the name you are actually going to use on the birth certificate. If her name is Kitty, it’s not Katherine!

DramaAlpaca · 12/08/2020 22:39

I think Kitty is very sweet, but it's too cutesy to be a standalone name and needs something more dignified (for want of a better word) on the birth certificate, Katherine for preference.

worstwitch18 · 14/08/2020 06:07

I like it as a nickname for Catherine/Katherine or a similar proper name.

She may well hate you for not putting catherine on the bc.

Kitty is a bit fashionable now, but when she is 46 and trying to get back in to workplace she might be cursing you for giving her such a dated name.

Or even at 22 trying to be taken seriously.

It is not a name to decide on her behalf that she should have an infantile name forever.

Mine is just dated. Not cutesy. That is bad enough.

I love it. I think it's good enough to stand alone but I have to admit I discounted it personally because I worried about pussy jokes etc at school the fact it could be considered a bit infantile.
I wouldn't want to put a completely different name on the BC though I don't think.

I love Catherine (or Katherine) with Kitty as a nn.

My uncle's mum was kitty and I only ever knew her as an old lady but it suited her beautifully. She was Catherine. A family member called their baby Eloise Kitty

Not my taste really, but I have heard of a female Kit (Kit on the BC), which you could then make Kitty when she is little. Kit when she is older. Although, not to my taste, it isn't silly, infantile or feline.

I think if you can visualise yourself at the age you are now, introducing yourself to your new boss or something.

"Hi, I'm Kit" - perfectly fine! Kind of cool axt

"Hi, I'm Kitty" - for me it would be a bit embarrassing, like saying "hi I'm a cute little kitten" type thing..? Something I wouldn't like as a grown woman in a professional setting.

I like Catherine or Catriona better though personally. Or how about Christina or Kristina?

AnnieMaul · 14/08/2020 21:03

Unless you really like Catherine/Katherine, I wouldn't put it on the birth certificate just so you can nickname her Kitty. Kitty and Katherine have totally different vibes IMO, so if you like Kitty go with that.

I also don't think it's different in terms of being infantile to the increasingly popular "Frankie" "Georgie" 'Vinnie" lot. There are plenty of those about.
