Can I use my maiden name?

My maiden name is Joseph, do you think I could use it as DS's first name? I really love it. DH says he isn't keen on 'biblical' names and whilst it is biblical, it feels like a classic to me and would be amazing to reuse it for DS ☺️ He gets DH's surname after all 😉

Do you think this would be ok or people would find it odd?

If you have changed your surname to your DH's name, how will most people know it was your original surname? I love Joseph, fantastic name.

CodenameVillanelle · 12/08/2020 10:28

Of course! Miranda did that in sex and the city didn't she - gave her DS dad's surname as a first name. Very cute. It also means your surname (not your 'maiden' surname) isn't erased. Thumbs up.

LittleBearPad · 12/08/2020 10:29

I really like this idea and Joseph is a lovely name

Scarby9 · 12/08/2020 10:29

Not at all odd.
It's a perfectly good stand alone name on its own.
Most people won't know your maiden name anyway, but it gives an extra layer of meaning when you do know the link.
Your bigger problem is your DH not liking biblical names, which does cut out a swathe of more traditional names. Maybe try him with Shadrac and Abednigi, then come back to Joseph / Joe / Jay...

It has always been a thing here in Scotland. My DP has his mother's family name.

FelicityPike · 12/08/2020 10:39

Yeah, I know a few people who’ve done similar (Graham & Stewart).

changemynametonight · 12/08/2020 10:41

Gorgeous name and with the family connection I’d definitely do it. If you can’t persuade your husband on it for a first name, could you both compromise on it being the middle name ?

Spitspotlosttheplot · 12/08/2020 11:02

Great to know you don't think it's odd. I love it as a first name too, maybe we will settle for a middle spot. Opens a whole new can of worms for other first names though as I feel like I'm stuck on this one

Very traditional thing to do in Scotland, I believe.

justoverthehorizon · 12/08/2020 13:46

no it's brilliant!

justwinginglife1 · 12/08/2020 13:48

My great grandmothers maiden name was Thomas - she used it as a middle name for my grandad, he used it for my dad, and my dad used it for my brother. Even though my son doesn't have our family's surname I have still used Thomas as his middle name. I love the fact is has carried on through the generations.

But you could totally use Joseph as a first name, if you OH doesn't agree then possibly a middle name?

barbrahunter · 12/08/2020 13:50

Lovely idea!

Footle · 12/08/2020 13:54

Your DH could just possibly make an exception for Joseph because it's your name and he loves you.
Middle name doesn't cut it. You want to be using it when you talk to and about your little boy.

lilylion · 12/08/2020 13:59

What’s he going to do when asked for his mother’s maiden name for security purposes like most banks do? They’re not going to like it also being his first name. Just a thought.

rottiemum88 · 12/08/2020 14:01

Not as a first name in our case, but we gave DS 'Thomas' as his middle name for the same reason, that it was my maiden name. I think it's a nice idea, providing you both agree on the name Smile

Banks haven't routinely asked for this for years, as so many people have mothers who didn't change their name (or similar). If they use security questions they tend to give a range of options.
ellenpartridge · 12/08/2020 14:08

Nice idea and a lovely name.

You don't have to use your mother's real maiden name.

It doesn't matter whether they like it or not to be honest, it is what it is.

DH has his mum's maiden name as his first name, never been a problem, also has another family surname in the middle. As PP have said, it's very common in Scotland

I actually use either of my grandmothers maiden names instead. They don't check

Never give a real maiden name anyway, far too easy for criminals to find out.
WaxOnFeckOff · 12/08/2020 16:26

They don't care what word you give, they just want a memorable word that if you forget, you can go check it out, most people know their mum's maiden name so that's what is suggested that you use. some just ask for a memorable word or place rather than a fact, it's hard to guess but hard to remember as well.

Nikori · 12/08/2020 16:27

Yes, it's very common in Scotland. My aunt's middle name is her mother's maiden name and her dad's first name. My dad's middle name is his mother's maiden name.

Spitspotlosttheplot · 12/08/2020 16:59

Thank you guys, that's really helpful. The bank suggestions doesn't concern me. Just got to try and win DH over 😕
