Thoughts on Erland for a boy?

I like Scottish and Norse names that are not too common but not too out there...

I know a couple of Erlands and it's a normal enough name where I live and one that I have only started considering very recently.

I just wonder if it might not be received so well anywhere else?

I love it. We nearly went with this but chose “the other” Orcadian name and we lived in SW London at the time of his birth.

If it’s okay where you live then that’s not really an issue is it? Not much shortening Options though if he wanted to go somewhere else and not constantly be asked “you’re called what????”... how about Erik? Or Magnus or Marcus?

I like Erland. It's easy to spell and pronounce.

emmathedilemma · 11/08/2020 13:17

I've never heard of it and I live in Scotland! I wouldn't choose it but it doesn't offend me.

HoratioNightboy · 11/08/2020 15:39

I really like it, but prefer the Erlend spelling. but either way, I can't see how anyone could have an issue with it.

AllPlayedOut · 11/08/2020 15:43

I'm not a fan. It doesn't have a very attractive sound.

Whatsyourflava · 11/08/2020 17:41

I don't really like it but maybe I just need to get used to it

JemimaTiggywinkle · 11/08/2020 18:38

I’ve never heard the name before, but assuming it’s pronounced as it looks, I can’t see anyone struggling with it. I would assume it’s pronounced Earl-und?

BoudicasBoudoir · 11/08/2020 20:13

I prefer it spelled with an ‘e’, as a PP said.

What if you aren't the only one thinking that and he end up being one of four Erlands in his class?

HD98 · 12/08/2020 19:02

@MikeUniformMike
Sorry, I'm not entirely sure what you mean - not the only one thinking what?

It’s sounds a bit nerdy to me. Like Norman.

MikeUniformMike · 12/08/2020 19:29

That it is a nice name, not overused and not too out there.

Elouera · 12/08/2020 19:32

I've never heard it before. Is it pronounced Errr-land? I'd worry people would think it was Ireland spelt wrong.

HathorX · 12/08/2020 19:41

It will get shortened to Erl. Do you like that nickname?

HD98 · 12/08/2020 19:57

@MikeUniformMike
Well that's definitely what I want to be aiming for rather than the opposite!
I know two from here - one is 12 and the other is 25+.
I also know another who doesn't live near me - he's the only one who sometimes has it shortened - to Eri.
I don't like Erl much but I've never heard that short version. If that's what he gets called by anybody then I wouldn't particularly mind as long as he didn't.

It's nice. Go for it.

Daphnise · 14/08/2020 18:20

It might get confused with Eland, which I think is some kind of antelope.

CharlieSays13 · 14/08/2020 18:22

I love it and I absolutely would have used it if I could.

olivebranches · 14/08/2020 18:56

I like it. Came across it the other day and it means 'foreigner'.
