Summer or Skye

A wee follow on from my previous post regarding summer inspired names.
Sadly the majority weren't to my taste. I am however quite taken by Summer and Skye.
I do have some reservations about how solid they are for a girl and whether they would age well?

Which name would you pick out of Summer and Skye? And why?
Or should I rethink my list?
My older child has a biblical name which was in the top 10 boys names in 2018.

Look forward to hearing your responses.

They're both beautiful names. I think Skye just wins it for me. Prettier sound than the "um" in "Summer".

elfran · 10/08/2020 16:09

Neither are my taste but I actually grew up with one of each (in the 80s/90s) and I'm sure, though I'm not in touch with them, both are "wearing" their names fine as adults! They're not the untested, modern names some might imagine them to be, I don't think.

If I were you I'd just take both to the birth with you, so to speak, and see which ones suits your daughter best. I don't see any strong reasons for one over the other, so just be led by instinct.

I love both your name choices. I'd say, at a push, Skye.
I think summer is lovely but because it's very pretty and girlie sounding name it might not withhold to a woman of 30plus but i still love it.

If you're looking for a Summer themed name go with Summer. Sky isn't just exclusive to the Summer is it.

PaundryLouder · 10/08/2020 17:03

Summer. Skye is an island and there all year round!

florascotia2 · 10/08/2020 17:15

Neither name is my favourite, but if you like them both, then good!

If it helps to make a decision, the Vikings, who invaded, called Skye 'cloudy isle' or 'misty isle' which is not terribly summery.

Over the centuries, the word Skye has also had other meanings attached to it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymology_of_Skye

MikeUniformMike · 10/08/2020 17:45

Skye. Summer rhymes with Bummer.

RuthW · 10/08/2020 17:57

I like Summer

Alwaysundecided · 10/08/2020 18:29

I love both names. I have to admit I can't imagine either on an older adult but that's just because these names weren't common 40 odd years ago. It wouldn't stop me using them.
I probably prefer Skye to Summer but they are both great.

DelphiniumBlue · 10/08/2020 18:32

I think Skye is slightly more hippy, but they are both pretty names.

wewillmeetagain · 10/08/2020 18:44

Summer is lovely, Skye is the name I hear being screeched in the playground by " certain types"!

DramaAlpaca · 10/08/2020 18:55

I've always liked Skye because I associate it with the island. I don't like Summer as a name.

Enough4me · 10/08/2020 19:00

How about Eve or Eden if your DS has a biblical name?

userabcname · 10/08/2020 19:12

I would choose Summer. I've always liked it! I'm less keen on Skye due to the number of Paw Patrol episodes I've watched with my 3yo.

Marcipex · 10/08/2020 19:48

Not Summer because it rhymes with bummer.
Skye is quite nice though.

aprilfools19 · 10/08/2020 19:53

Summer.
Skye makes me think of sheep dogs. So I know that’s my own personal issue lol. I grew up in the Lake District surrounded by farmers and I swear every other sheep dog was called Skye.

Whatsyourflava · 10/08/2020 20:01

I like Summer best
Skye is a bit downmarket to my ears

ifiwasascent · 10/08/2020 20:03

Summer is my fave out of the 2

Doubtingmustafa · 10/08/2020 20:25

I do like summer but my issue is in the U.K. it just sounds like “summa”, and some people may think her name is actually Summa until you explain it’s Summer like the season. It’s just a small issue though.

I feel that Summer is kind of dated to 2000’s era (after the OC). Skye is more current or at least 2010 era.

Both however are not to my taste, but both are lovely names that conjure up positive images.

Though I have to agree both give me a slightly downmarket feel...perhaps Skye slightly less so.

Only in non rhotic accents. In Scotland, or Cornwall, for ex, an -er sound won't sound the same as an -a sound.
