Agatha?

What do people think of this name?

It's my favourite name ever, yet it's so underrated. I love, love, love the name Agatha! And Aggie is an adorable nickname!

I'm kind of scared to tell people how much I love this name, because hardly anyone names their baby Agatha anymore.

I was talking to a friend about baby names the other day and after she told me her favourite name (which is Tigerlily, which I hate. I simply smiled at her and nodded politely), then I told her about my secret love for Agatha - AND SHE PULLED A FACE! Angry

Needless to say, I was slightly disheartened. Especially after I kept a straight face when she told me her favourite name. We all have different opinions, I get that. But she could have at least pretended to like it.

I think literature and films have given it a bad name. Like Agatha Trunchbull! Oh, and I think there might be an evil Agatha in The Worst Witch too.

I still love it though. I actually means 'good', so I have no idea where the evil stereotype came from.

What do you all think of the name? Tigerlily or Agatha?

We considered Agatha for DD2. I like it. I have a fab Polish friend called Agata, which is also nice. Tigerlily is ridiculous.

FizzyGreenWater · 09/08/2020 15:18

Love it.

The name Agatha seems a real Marmite choice. Personally, I really cannot bear it. To me, it seems so harsh, stuffy, buttoned-up, with zero sex appeal or fun. If you choose a marmite name, you have to be prepared for reactions like that of your friend. Presumably, she would have been more discreet if you’d actually had a baby and announced her name was Agatha. As you were only discussing hypothetical names, I think it’s okay for her to tell you her real thoughts.

Lots of the names I like, and am considering, are openly hated by many people (Loveday, Lennox, Hero) but I’m not naming my child to please other people. I couldn’t care less what they think. If you like Agatha, then jolly well use it.

If I had to pick either Agatha or Tigerlily for my own child, I would choose the latter.

I love it!

cuddlymunchkin · 09/08/2020 16:02

Christie!

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 09/08/2020 16:03

I love the name Agatha but then I am a huge Agatha Christie fan!

CheshireCats · 09/08/2020 16:05

I love it! Was one I suggested for DD 15 yrs ago, but DP said no. Go for it!

milienhaus · 09/08/2020 16:07

It does feel old fashioned still but it’s a nice name - I know a lovely French Agathe (pronounced quite differently of course!).

It is a bit of a marmite name though as a PP has said so done people are just never going to like it.

Peachbubble · 09/08/2020 16:11

I like it, it reminds me of Agatha Christie.

MissMarplesHandbag · 09/08/2020 16:23

Not overly keen on Agatha. But it’s better than Tigerlily. I do like the nn Taggie.

Magicbabywaves · 09/08/2020 16:24

DC3 would’ve been Agatha if he hadn’t been a boy.

jellyjellybaby · 09/08/2020 17:05

I love Agatha but can't use it because I am Spanish and the spelling is Agata, gata means cat so yeah I can only imagine the amount of bullying that would involve. It will always be on my list just in case though.

Tigerlily I adore, 100% considering this but it's always been kept on my middle name list. I wouldn't dare use it as a first name.

If I had to choose between the two names for a first I'd go with Agatha even though I like Tigerlily a whole lot more but I couldn't burden my DC with that for a first

custardbear · 09/08/2020 17:08

Tiger lily sounds a bit chav council house type name ... sorry! Agatha sounds more sophisticated- I'm not keen on it personally as I'm not into old lady names but it's certainly better than tiger lily

AllPlayedOut · 09/08/2020 17:14

It's one of the ugliest names around.

‘Chav council house’? Hmm

Both absolutely awful imo but for different reasons.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 09/08/2020 17:26

I love it.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/08/2020 17:29

I love it. Much more taste than Tigerlily.

I imagine an Agatha as smart, strong, witty and a good conversationalist. I hate Aggie though. If you like a name enough to use it, use it.

BBCONEANDTWO · 09/08/2020 17:30

Love that name - go for it.

GreenEyedDevil · 09/08/2020 17:32

I like it

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 09/08/2020 17:32

Neither of them are names I’d choose, Agatha is too harsh sounding and Tigerlily is too cutesy, but they’re both perfectly acceptable names

midsomermurderess · 09/08/2020 18:33

I like it. And it is so refreshing in a sea of Milly's and other cutsie, frilly girls' names.

PoodleMoth · 09/08/2020 18:41

I'm just not sure. I knew a young Aggie (she got Agatha occasionally) once, I always wondered if she grew into her name. It just seemed so big on her and didn't seem suit her, which is odd as evem more unusual names seem normal once you get used to them. She was always being compared to her younger, classically beautiful sister with a less harsh name. I hope she found her own way and grew into herself as a young lady.
