What do you think of the name abby? And which spelling. My partner quite likes it but I think it's a bit meh

I agree with you, it’s meh. I’m afraid I find it so totally uninspiring. It’s not even hideous enough to be interesting. Is it going to be short for something? I’d always assume it was a NN. If it’s going to be the full name, I think Abby looks the most complete, but Abbie is the nicest spelling. Abi looks like it should be pronounced Ay Bee.

Rachel247 · 09/08/2020 10:30

Looks like a nickname for something.

CodenameVillanelle · 09/08/2020 10:31

It's ok as a nickname for Abigail but to me it's quite dated

Rabbit600 · 09/08/2020 15:02

I like it only as a nickname. And the 'Abbie' spelling is my favourite.

tazzy73 · 09/08/2020 15:15

Hi MissMoodyMoo,

I have an Abby. Don't think the name is dated or old fashioned. It really suits her.
It's not short for anything. I don't get the way people pick a name and automatically pick a nn on birth.
Her 2nd name is Louise.
Taz.

Poppydaisies · 09/08/2020 18:06

Abi is the traditional short forms for Abigail.

I don't like Abbi/Abbie/Abbey/Abby. Basically I'd use only one B.

MikeUniformMike · 09/08/2020 18:59

Abigail is nice.
You could also spell it Abbey.

I know 2 Abis and one Gail, all Abigail on BC.

Lavenderblues · 09/08/2020 22:44

I prefer Gail as nickname for Abigail.

daisypond · 09/08/2020 22:46

Abigail is nice. But none of your suggested names, unless short forms for Abigail.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 09/08/2020 22:50

It's always been one of my favourite names growing up. I knew an Abbi and she was so lovely.

FizzyGreenWater · 09/08/2020 23:22

Not a fan at all - very meh

octoberfarm · 10/08/2020 03:25

I like it as a nickname for Abigail. Prefer Abi to the other options.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 10/08/2020 05:00

A bit bland - fine, but I can't imagine seeing at the best babe in the world. A bit 90s.

Mrstwiddle · 10/08/2020 05:25

Agree with previous posters, it’s kind of a dull name and retro (but not in a good way)

GoshHashana · 10/08/2020 11:18

I've always disliked this name. Unimaginative. Abigail is so ugly. Like a lumpen farm wench from the 12th century.

romaniac123 · 10/08/2020 11:20

I do quite like it, I went to school with an Abbey, but my preferred spelling is Abbie

Grufallisfriends · 10/08/2020 13:16

Wonder if Abbey's surname is Westminster Grin?

MikeUniformMike · 10/08/2020 16:39

No, it is National.

Figey · 01/09/2020 15:54

I’m thinking of using Abbie as a nick name for Arabella. I’ve also seen it as a nick name for Gabrielle, Abrielle, Aubrey, Tabitha, Annabelle, Isabel, Sabrina...

mothertoteens · 01/09/2020 16:14

I prefer it as a nn. I like Abigail, but I'm sure you could find more modern/uncommon names if you look. My favourite spelling is Abbie.
