Names that work in both Polish and English?

I find this so tricky! Dp and I like such different names, and we’d both like them to work in both countries.

For reference dp loves the name Jakub with the nn Kuba, I am really, really not keen. I adore Henry, but the Polish equivalent Henryk is incredibly old fashioned according to dp. I like Eliasz, but again he hates it!

Girls names I LOVE Aurelia, dp not keen. It’s so hard to find a name that works in two languages that are incredible different.

Anastasia (English pronunciation in UK, proper one in poland)?
Kasia or Katya?
Ewelina?

These are all pretty straight forward for Brits I think.

Bianka, Konrad, Amelia/Amelka, Aleksandra, Igor, Dominik?

Jamhandprints · 07/08/2020 20:14

Yes, the Polish kids in my kids school have names that we would consider old fashioned...but the ones that could work may be: Sofia, Lily, Elena, Anna, Patrick, Daniel, Oliver.

Joseph, Thomas, Mark... Both have simple enough Polish options...

Just thinking of the names of children I have taught:

Mateuz - could be Matt?
Aleksander- pretty much Alex
Dawid - David
Jakob (Kuba) - taught loads of lovely Kubas.
Pawel- not sure what this translates to tho

Oliwia - pretty standard I'm both
Patrycja (Patti) - again taught lots of lovely girls with this name
Agata - I actually love this
Vendija - I think this is Wendy?
Ewelina - it's basically Eva/Evie so easily translates

Suzanna or variant of spelling.

I love the polish pronouciation zoo Zah na

My ds is Tomas. This is because we needed a name that worked both English and Spanish. It's spelt Spanish way but all English relatives pronounce it the English way! Along with teachers and friend etc!

I knew a polish Magda which I think is nice

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/08/2020 20:31

Laura pronounced Lowra according to a little Polish girl I taught. I thought it was lovely but she insisted on the English pronunciation in school!

alangarneristerrifying · 07/08/2020 20:32

Jeremi if you don't mind it having the hard "J" in English (think the Polish nn is Jerko which obviously doesn't work in English, but could be Jerry interchangeably)

Cam2020 · 07/08/2020 20:33

Alexander
Kasia
