I’m struggling massively too and I can’t say a book has helped me! There tends to be better ideas/more unique combinations of you look at videos on YouTube or even on these forums.

I liked mine. I sat and highlighted the names I liked

AlwaysLatte · 06/08/2020 15:04

We printed a big list off. One of us highlighted the ones we liked, out of those the other highlighted in a different colour the ones they liked, then back to the first for choices 1,2,3 on just the double highlighted ones. Then from that list of 1s the other put choices 1,2,3. We then chose again from the list of mutual 1s, until we had narrowed it down literally to THE name! So it chooses itself in the end, sort of.

All the names from baby books you can find online imo. I have a baby book and flicked through it once and never looked again haha.

BiBabbles · 06/08/2020 15:14

Rather than a book, I'd recommend the Behind the Name site where you can create multiple lists, share or print them off, and put up polls of different combinations (though it can be a major time suck Grin )

Kokeshi123 · 06/08/2020 15:18

Worked for me!

Whatsyourflava · 06/08/2020 15:25

@BiBabbles I love the website "behind the name"
It's an excellent site!

bridgetreilly · 06/08/2020 17:24

I'd get an app instead, tbh. There are good ones where you and your partner can both go through separately and it will give you the matches and make suggestions based on that.

MissHoney85 · 08/08/2020 17:05

I don't find them that helpful as I'm a teacher and have always been a bit of a name geek, so my opinions are pretty well formed and I don't tend to find anything 'new' in them. But, my DH is a bit different and I've been trying to encourage him to come up with his own list of names rather than just responding (mostly negatively!) to my ideas. So I got him a baby name book for his birthday and it seems to have gone down well. It's good for flicking through and starting discussions.

zigaziga · 08/08/2020 17:52

It depends. I’m someone who likes having a real book in my hands .. if I really want to read a particular novel, I’ll get the paperback rather than read on my phone/ kindle.
I read pregnancy books, breastfeeding books, parenting books .. I like having a tangible book to leaf through before bed.

Oneandabean · 09/08/2020 22:34

I bought one but didn’t find anything I hadn’t already seen online. Waste of money

howlathebees · 09/08/2020 22:36

I think they’re all online these days reallt

charlottemont · 10/08/2020 05:52

I have always really loved nameberry for browsing names. I don't think it's worth spending money when there are so many free online resources available!

Do you have a few names that you generally like (not necessarily something you'd name your child, but similar feel)? I love names and would love to help :)

chubbyhotchoc · 10/08/2020 21:21

Thanks ladies. Maybe I'll just stick to online.
@charlottemont I want something feminine and pretty but not too old fashioned. I don't want anything that ends with an 'ee' sound like Rosie or Ivy,
I like Jasmine and Faye but Dh doesn't like either, he likes Olivia but I don't. It's tough

Hmmm
How about:

Serena
Maeve
Iris
Thea
Lila/Lilia
Allegra

chubbyhotchoc · 10/08/2020 23:56

Lol apart from Iris they are all names I had on my list. My Auntie is Thea. Dh has vetoed them all though. He's suggested Melody tonight. I'm not sure as really don't like Mel which I'm sure you'd get.

Cant hurt to look at one. Library might have one if you don't want to spend.

I remember reading film credits to get inspiration.

LittleHootie · 11/08/2020 00:03

I'm showing my age but imagine Melody always having to tell people "not melanie".

RiftGibbon · 11/08/2020 00:09

I had a flick through some books at the library to start with. Then I got online. Then ended up with a name that appears in both our families, and is fairly standard.

sweetnosugar · 11/08/2020 09:23

Maeve, as another has suggested is lovely and suits your criteria.
I wouldn’t bother with a baby name book - google!

theruffles · 11/08/2020 11:00

We were given one when I was pregnant with DC1 but it really wasn't much use beyond providing amusement. There are some very strange names!

You could try SJ Strum on Youtube? She does a video every Monday with baby name suggestions on lots of different themes.

charlottemont · 11/08/2020 20:54

Yeah I'm not the biggest fan of Melody.. I do like Elodie, but you may not want to use it if you don't have any connection to France. What names other than Melody and Olivia does your husband like?

GirlCalledJames · 11/08/2020 20:56

Nymbler is a great site as it uses names you like to generate lists.
