Traditional names - whatever happened to Ada and Percy?

There are some small neighbouring terraced streets in a town near me called Ada, Alfred, Mary & Percy - I’m guessing names from the builder’s family.

Mary and Alfie are not that unusual currently, but does anybody know any Adas or Percys? (Or Herberts, come to that? Both my Victorian-born grandfathers gloried in that fabulous name. We need more Herberts.)

I remember a baby Percy in a cafe when I was pregnant with DS in 2017. It didn't make the long list.

EssentialHummus · 05/08/2020 14:05

I know plenty of little Adas. Percy... maybe Percy Pigs have put people off?

AnnaSW1 · 05/08/2020 14:06

I know babies called both of these names Smile

JanQi · 05/08/2020 14:10

Percy is my top boy name and I have a friend who has just had an Ada!

123Dancewithme · 05/08/2020 22:59

My neighbour has a grandson named Herbie.

Msgiggles30 · 05/08/2020 23:09

I think Ada has risen in popularity due to Peaky Blinders!

Commentutappelles · 05/08/2020 23:17

Lots of both where I am. Both deeply unattractive names, but currently very trendy, so likely to be lots more. My ggf was a Percy, but my only associations would be Thrower or Pig, neither of which is ideal...

AdaColeman · 06/08/2020 14:48

I used to know a lovely old gentleman called Percy, short for Percival. He had a very dry sense of humour and a wicked glint in his eyes, he had lived life to the full I think. It would be nice to think that his name will carry on being used! (smile)

NamiSwan · 06/08/2020 20:44

My almost 7 yo is called Ada. We named her after Ada Lovelace, and at the time it wasn't too popular and was quite an unusual name, without being too out there, which was why we chose it. Now its become incredibly popular due to Peaky Blinders 🙈

Paddingtonthebear · 06/08/2020 20:47

I work with young children and I know a couple of Ada’s and one Percy

semumm · 07/08/2020 12:58

You've got it the wrong way round. Ada is everywhere right now but Mary is very unusual nowadays.

FourPlasticRings · 07/08/2020 13:03

I know a little Percy. Nearly called DD Ada but thought it sounded too much like, 'aid her'.

JeremyIronsBenFolds · 07/08/2020 13:08

I actually know a Percy Ada (girl!) Grin

BlanketSky · 07/08/2020 18:32

I taught a 16yo Ada this year

Mol1628 · 07/08/2020 18:35

Lots of young/baby Adas round here.

diamente · 07/08/2020 18:43

Percy is a Nn for penis probably why it's not used much anymore

SpacePug · 07/08/2020 19:19

Never heard of Ada, is it pronounced Ay-da? (Rhyme with Day-da)
I love Percy, reminds me of Thomas the tank engine but DH doesn't like it

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/08/2020 19:21

I know a lovely Ada aged 15.

You've got me on Percy though.

TakeASadSong · 07/08/2020 19:23

I think Ada and Percy are already on the rise as part of the ‘granny chic’ name trend.

Herbie is such a sweet name. Haven’t met a child with that name yet.

SemperIdem · 07/08/2020 19:33

I know a few Ada’s. No Percy’s or Herbert’s though. Hector is one I’ve heard quite a bit recently and don’t understand the appeal of.

DancingLady · 07/08/2020 19:35

Ada is a lovely name, as is Mary. Also Jane, another traditional name. My DS goes to nursery with a girl called Joanne, which is very unusual for that age group!

DancingLady · 07/08/2020 19:36

I know a couple of Alfies and Mabels, no Adas. Ida and Ivy are pretty too.

grandmasterstitch · 07/08/2020 19:41

Percy is on our list for the next baby, along with Ronald and Walter. I know one Ada and one Herbie but no young Marys. I loved Mary but DH vetoed it

zigaziga · 07/08/2020 19:57

Yep, as people have already commented Ada is definitely “back”. I know two under two.

I actually like Percy too!

ZoChan · 07/08/2020 20:41

My cousin named his son Percy after our grandad. Also know a 6 year old Ada!
