Welsh name experts needed! Osian

I have a child in my class next year called Osian. I know it's pronounced Osh-an, but I've heard it with the 'a' pronounced clearly like 'apple', and also with it pronounced more like an 'u', or rather missed altogether - i.e. Osh-n. Which is correct?

a as in apple or cat

Thanks both! That's what I thought, just wanted to get it right.

Yep, definitely Osh-an, not Osh-un. Same applies to other Welsh names ending in an - Bethan, Megan, Dylan etc.

Similarly, in names ending in -on (e.g. Rhiannon, Manon, Gwion) the sound is on not un .

Yeah we really pronounce all our vowels, although of course some pronunciations are commonly anglicised (eg Megan quite commonly pronounced megun).

It might depend on your accent too, I knew an Oshain who pronounced it with the a sound missed altogether like your last example.

ArseyWelshNameBore · 04/08/2020 10:48

Oshain isn't a welsh name so that is irrelevant.

Osian is pronounced OSH-an (an like in can). I know many of them, of all ages, and that is the only pronunciation I have ever heard by Welsh speakers.
