Theodosia

Came across this name in Hamilton. I like it but might be biased by the lovely voice of Leslie Odom Jr singing it. What do people think of it as a name? Expecting DD in December.

I agree with the pp that said it sounds like a disease, sorry. What's wrong with just Theodora?

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2020 18:02

I don't like Theodora, Thea or Dorothea. I don't like Theodosia either.

I do like Dorothy.

FrenchtoEnglish · 31/07/2020 18:04

Sounds like a cream for an itchy vulva.

Cluckycluck · 31/07/2020 18:16

I love it and love the suggestion of shortening to Teddy.

SerenityNowwwww · 31/07/2020 18:17

Sounds like a Greek island.

FelicityBeedle · 31/07/2020 18:21

I also love it, so many gorgeous nickname options
Dosie
Thea
Ted
Theo
Sisi

SomeWateryTart · 31/07/2020 18:26

Not sure about Dosie as a nn. Where I'm from dozy means a bit dim, but maybe that's regional.

SerenityNowwwww · 31/07/2020 18:28

Usually followed by mare isn’t it?

SomeWateryTart · 31/07/2020 18:29

Ha! Yes dozy mare or sometimes just you dozy.... and leaving the rest to the imagination!

SerenityNowwwww · 31/07/2020 18:35

Twonk?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 31/07/2020 18:37

I love that song so, so much but I don’t think I’d use the name. There are a lot of boy Theos around at the moment, too.

Dorothea? Thora?

AdoreTheBeach · 31/07/2020 18:39

Sorry. When said out loud, sounds like a disease

SomeWateryTart · 31/07/2020 18:45

@SerenityNowwwww

Twonk?
Grin
amylou8 · 31/07/2020 18:45

Sorry it's awful.

Dededa · 31/07/2020 18:47

Well that’s my 17 minutes of peace without a Hamilton song playing in my head brought to an end.

Lovely song, but the name’s a bit much for me.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 31/07/2020 18:50

It sounds like some kind of Victorian era disease.

This.

SickOfNorthernExile · 31/07/2020 18:53

Oh I like it!
And the song makes me weep (particularly the Regina Spector cover). I sing it to my little boy and I always get a bit tearful.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 31/07/2020 19:01

You can keep all of Georgia.... Theodosia she’s mine!

I agree- after watching Hamilton- I love the name (and also Angelica) but I probably wouldn’t be brave enough for use it.

babychange12 · 31/07/2020 19:38

I love the song, could listen to it all day and it brings a tear to my eye every time but.. no wouldn't be brave enough to use it

Iwantalonglie · 31/07/2020 20:13

Theodosia is a bit too much.

Theodora is lovely. It's also the name of the Empress Theodora, the wife of the Byzantine emperor Justinian, who was one of the most 'kick-ass' women ever at a time in history where woman had very little power...

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/jun/10/theodora-empress-from-the-brothel

Though I remember reading that she did order someone to be executed by being boiled to death in their bath, which seemed unnecessarily gruesome and bloodthirsty to me.

Oh well, we all have our moments, I guess.

Katerinakaterinaki · 31/07/2020 20:56

Theodosia is another version of Theodora, it has the same meaning - but Theodora sounds much nicer! At least people will pronounce it correctly.

Ellmau · 02/08/2020 14:32

It's beautiful.

FenellaMaxwell · 02/08/2020 20:47

It does make me think of Theodosia Burr, and the fact she came to a tragic and mysterious end, so it’s not one I would use.

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2020 21:18

How about Rhodothea?

JammyHands · 02/08/2020 23:12

Love it.
