Too matchy?

Llamakarma · 27/07/2020 18:04

I am expecting my first child and don’t know the sex. Our absolute top favourite names are Iris for a girl or Isaac for a boy.

My concern is if we have another child in the future and have the opposite sex, are these names too matchy to use together?

I hate matchy sibling names! But these are my two favourite overall. Obviously I realise this may never even be an issue but just considering future options Grin

I don't think they're matchy, Iris has a soft s sound and Isaac is harder.
I like them both

The name we had picked out for a DS when I was pregnant with DD1 was not the same one we picked at the beginning of my pregnancy with DD2. I wouldn’t worry too much about that at this stage.

If you have one that you wouldn’t be able to part with and you have that sex this time, name your DC that. If you know you couldn’t imagine naming a DD/DS anything other than Iris or Isaac and you have the opposite sex this time, I would rethink the name you use. Hopefully that makes some sort of sense. I think they're okay, though I personally wouldn't choose to have a repeated initial. But they don't sound like a matching set.

FourPlasticRings · 27/07/2020 18:18

You're overthinking it, OP. You could have two boys or two girls or twins or be unable to conceive a second time, you just don't know. Don't stress about a second pregnancy when you're still on your first! Use whichever is appropriate and cross the 'too matchy?' bridge if and when you come to it.

Isthisfinallyit · 27/07/2020 18:33

They sound quite matchy to me. Are these the only options you like? Because otherwise you can always decide something else for the second child. Most people I know don't actually reuse the left over name.

Chocolatecake12 · 27/07/2020 18:36

How about Lois instead of iris? Then the initials would be different? Just an idea!!

winterisstillcoming · 27/07/2020 19:02

I'd say go with it. You may feel differently about the name by the time you have a second child, or it may be the same sex. Worry about it when the time comes.

Thank you for all your replies.

I absolutely realise it’s a complete non problem right now and may never be a problem.

I think realistically, we will use our favourite for whichever sex comes along now because this is a real human (vs a non-existent potential future human Grin ).
I just think I would particularly struggle to ‘let go’ of Iris because I’ve always wanted to use it for as long as I can remember.

I suppose I’m hoping people will tell me they don’t sound too matchy together!

Isaac and Iris sound really lovely together and compliment each other well @Llamakarma I really think you're overthinking. Apart from both beginning with the letter I they are totally different names!

PlantPotting · 28/07/2020 21:06

I know some people worry about siblings having the same initial because of the "post" by honestly how much do you even get by post now in 2020 let alone in 15 years when your children start getting their own post.
I get birthday cards from friends but they wrote my full name anyway so that wouldn't be an issue. The doctors have stopped sending letters and do it by text and email now even for blood results. My bank no longer post statements and my phone bill via email. I think if we tell our children we were worried about "pos" they'll laugh at us!

You're really lucky you have 2 names you love ready to go OP

emilybrontescorsett · 28/07/2020 21:09

I think they are matchy but would use one and then wait and see what happens.
