my grandads name was james but was known as jimmy and I love it! But I don't particularly like the name "james" would it be acceptable to use the name jimmy as a name on it's own?

Personally I wouldn't.

avamiah · 27/07/2020 02:15

Yes why not , Jimmy is a great name, really cool .
J for short .
Xx

daisypond · 27/07/2020 07:35

No, I wouldn’t. James is much nicer and you can still use Jimmy if you really want. Jimmy has a very different image.

Twizbe · 27/07/2020 07:55

My grandpa was James known as Jim.

My son is James known as Jimmy.

For me, we had to use James on the birth certificate. Jimmy is a child's name and I full expect him to be Jim as an adult but I wanted him to have the proper name to use if he wanted.

Hardly anyone calls him James though.

ILoveStickers · 27/07/2020 07:57

I think you could use Jim on a birth certificate (if you really dislike James), but not Jimmy.

IKEA888 · 27/07/2020 07:58

go for it.
If you love it that's all that matters.

Morgana7 · 27/07/2020 08:02

I would put James on the birth certificate so he has the option to use it when he’s older. You could tell everyone he’s to be known as Jimmy when he’s born though.

Skyliner001 · 27/07/2020 08:05

Just makes me think jimmy saville 😱😭

Grufallosfriends · 27/07/2020 11:07

Jimmy Saville here too, unfortunately!

BiggerBoat1 · 27/07/2020 11:08

Makes me think of Jimmy Tarbuck!

Its quite sweet, but I wouldn't put it on the birth certificate. Why not name him James, but use Jimmy as a family name?

TeetotalKoala · 27/07/2020 11:13

My grandfather was James known as Jim. My uncle is James known as Jimmy and I named DS2 James. He goes by James or Jim, and sometimes Jimmy. I like having the formal name so he can use whatever he prefers. He isn't hugely keen on Jimmy and will tell you he prefers Jim and James. And definitely NEVER Jamie.
Two different friends of mine have a Billy. Both are William on the birth certificate, but they have been Billy since they were born. The older one started to ask to go by William at about 10.

Mish85 · 27/07/2020 11:15

Of course you can. Jimmy's a great name! Very cool. And what a special meaning, the most important reason of why it's a good name to use. If Jimmy wants to be known as Jim when he's older he can. Your Grandpa is known as Jimmy and he's an adult, so there's no reason a grown man cant have the name.

Lavenderblues · 27/07/2020 13:47

James is a good solid name.

Jamie, Jimmy etc are sweet nicknames for friends and family.

Lavenderblues · 27/07/2020 13:54

I think most people would prefer to put a full name on their CV eg James or Edward, instead of family nicknames (Jimmy or Teddy)?!

Give him the option.

123Dancewithme · 27/07/2020 16:14

I’d put James on the bc.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/07/2020 16:47

Love Jimmy but definitely James.

I think of Jimmy Anderson, he’s a James, he seems to be called both Jimmy and James equally and seems to switch between the two with ease.

MrsMop1964 · 27/07/2020 16:53

My grandad was James , known as Jim . I'd put the full name on the birth certificate to give him the option.
Unfortunately Jimmy makes me think of Jimmy Riddle (but that's because I'm old fashioned)

TheVanguardSix · 27/07/2020 16:59

You love it. It's your grandfather's name. Why wouldn't you use it? Just put James on the birth certificate.

Jimi Hendrix. Enough said.

DramaAlpaca · 27/07/2020 19:31

I honestly think it should be James on the bc.

Jj2431 · 28/07/2020 19:05

my son is James. I wasn't keen on James either but went with it as it was classic and because I have always LOVED Jimmy. James has now grown on me but my James also goes by Jimmy. Love it. Would put James on birth certificate as I don't like nicknames put on birth certificates. He has options then too and you can just always call him Jimmy :)

PlantPotting · 28/07/2020 20:48

I'm not usually a stickler for this but I love James so much I'd personally put it on the birth certificate

It's so easy once you're child is at school or nursery. All the forms these days ask for "official name" plus what you'd like to be "known as". Just put Jimmy and that'll be his name on his text books and register

emilybrontescorsett · 28/07/2020 21:12

Of course you can use Jimmy. I don't like it and I don't like Jim or Jamie either which is why James was completely off limits for me.

CountessFrog · 28/07/2020 21:18

Savile. Every time.

chipsandgin · 28/07/2020 21:20

James is lovely, Jamie or Jim as MN, but Jimmy Saville is a bit fresh in people’s minds imo for a Jimmy!

chipsandgin · 28/07/2020 21:20

*nn not MN (autocorrect 🙄)!
