Is Anna overused?

aprilfools19 · 26/07/2020 12:10

I’m not pregnant but Anna is in my top 5 girls names.
I just read another friend in which OP was asking opinions on Anna as well as 2 other names and quite a few comments said it’s overused.

I personally don’t know of any little Anna’s. I just asked my friend who’s a primary school teacher and there’s just one in her school. The reason I like it is because it’s obviously a well known name but it’s not too “unique” I’d never thought of it as a name where there’d be more than one in a class for example.

It’s beautiful. I have a 9year old and a 13 year old and have never come across an Anna.

SionnachRua · 26/07/2020 12:12

We are overrun with Annas in my school so from my perspective, yes. It's overused and bland - falls into the same bracket as Emily, Ella, Sophie, Eva etc. Whether or not other schools have that experience I don't know.

kathryn19801 · 26/07/2020 12:17

Yes... I didnt know another little Anna, called my daughter that ... Three in her class! It is really popular on its own as well as linked on eg Annabelle, Anna-Rose etc

Pinkypink · 26/07/2020 12:28

I think its a timeless name enjoying a surge in popularity at the moment.
My daughter has a name thats always called overused on mn but there were only 2 others in her primary school none in her class.
People often say what a lovely name she has and it's easy to spell and pronounce -as Anna is. I would go for it

BinkyBoinky · 26/07/2020 12:30

Totally overused and boring.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/07/2020 12:57

How interesting. That’s not my perception at all. I know two adult Annas, one in her thirties and one in her fifties, and no children. It hasn’t been even in the top 50 for fifteen years.

netflixismysidehustle · 26/07/2020 13:02

If Anna was overused it would be a top 3 name imo
You can search for names by postcode if you're worried that she'll be one of many.

Millicent10 · 26/07/2020 13:05

I don’t think so, my ds has 4 x Olivers in his class and I seem to have met 100s of others, that seems overused. I only know a couple of Annas.

bridgetreilly · 26/07/2020 13:14

I don't know any under 20.

kenandbarbie · 26/07/2020 13:48

I only know Anna's my age (mid 40s). I'd gave thought it was unusual for babies now.

Spied · 26/07/2020 13:50

Love Anna. I don't know of any under 30.

chunkyrun · 26/07/2020 13:51

It's classic and timeless hence the popularity. It's a perfectly fine name op

BiarritzCrackers · 26/07/2020 13:52

There were three in my class at school, and I'm early 40s, but I only know one child Anna, who is in DS' current class at school. Don't recall any at his preschool or infant school.

WildCherryBlossom · 26/07/2020 13:58

There is only one at my DCs primary school. I know two adult Anna's: one Austrian in her 40s and one American in her 70s and I met a Spanish teenage Anna a couple of years ago.

So no I don't think it's overused. I think it is fresh, international, pretty and very versatile. Definitely a good one to use if you are likely to live in different countries as the spelling and pronunciation are straightforward.

daisypond · 26/07/2020 14:01

I don’t think it’s overused. The youngest one I know is 20. It’s a lovely name.

FluffyPJs · 26/07/2020 14:02

I've been teaching for 21 years and have never taught an Anna, or known one in any of the schools. Also never met one via my son, who is 14. In my experience I don't think it's over used!

Cbeebiesrehab · 26/07/2020 14:06

I’m really surprised by some of these comments! Never met a child Anna before! Annabel and Annie yes but never an Anna!

sibbys · 26/07/2020 14:08

No. I know 1 Anna (child) and 5 adults named Anna. It's a good name.

PotteringAlong · 26/07/2020 14:09

Frozen. It’s having its name moment!

MikeUniformMike · 26/07/2020 14:17

I really like it. I know a few of different ages.
I also like Ann and Annie.
I'm not keen on Anne (never met a nice one), Annabel (although I know a lovely one or Annalise

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/07/2020 14:19

Frozen. It’s having its name moment!
You’d think so but there’s no discernible bump in popularity after 2013, when the first film came out. Ana has risen quite quickly, possibly because of the new prominence of the American pronunciation of Anna used in the film.
Whatsyourflava · 26/07/2020 14:23

@Pinkypink Anna is not "enjoying a surge in popularity". Look at the official statistics- it's been on a downward trajectory since the year 2000 - so it's numbers have been declining each and every year for the past 20 years.

It's gone from being number 31 in the charts in the year 2000, to being number 85 in the year 2018.

Given it's consistent downward trajectory numbers wise, I'd say by the time the official 2020 statistics are released, I predict anna will have left the top 100

I'm conscious/interested in what @kathryn19801 said about there being other names like Anna-Rose etc that make "Anna" feel more popular than it is. I've personally never met anyone with a hyphenated Anna-Rose but Anna sticks out to be for its classic elegance, in a way that I'd think of "Anna-Rose" as a totally different name

Keep Anna on your list @aprilfools19 ❤️

What other names do you like

ThunderR0ad78 · 26/07/2020 14:26

Beautiful name, not overused at all where I live - Surrey!

aprilfools19 · 26/07/2020 14:33

whatsyourflava thanks for those statistics ! As well as Anna I love Alexandra and Andrea/andi (bit of a pattern there) haha. I also really like Robyn, Juliet and Kate.
