I am 37 weeks pregnant, do you prefer Poppy or Isabelle? Surname will be Baker. Thank you x

Thanks everyone for your input - her middle name will be Achillea as it is our family name.

Not keen on Poppy. Its a bit twee. Isabelle is nice.

DemiFrancaise · 24/07/2020 22:19

Laughing at some of these comments! 🤣

I am a 40 year old Isabelle.

(Love the pp who said it’s a “fussy” spelling!)

It’s the French spelling, it’s a French name and I grew up with it in the UK and never met another Isabelle until everyone started using it for their babies about 10 years ago.

I like it though, it’s always been “different” and stand out, for me, but that’s for someone my age.
When all the Isabelle’s now are 40 I guess they won’t be saying the same thing.

Just my own observations...

Bella

Poppy is just not a nice sound. I like its energy. It's ''bright'' but it isn't suitable for a human name. JMO obviously.

Isabelle is ubiquitous. Nothing wrong with that, it's pretty.

I'd go for Bella, it's kind of 'bright' sounding like Poppy.

Whatsyourflava · 24/07/2020 22:22

I really like both names. Poppy probably my favourite as I love the sound and simplicity of it

OhTheRoses · 24/07/2020 22:24

I lime Isabel. I wanted it for dd but DH didn't like it. Dd's 22, DS 25 and there were tons of Isabel's (and variants) in their classes.

namesall · 24/07/2020 22:24

I love Poppy!

I think Isabelle might go better with your surname though x

Spidey66 · 24/07/2020 22:25

Both are lovely but Poppy has the edge for me.

daisypond · 24/07/2020 22:27

I like both, but use Isabelle with the French spelling only if you’re French. Otherwise, it’s Isabel or Isobel.

lakeswimmer · 24/07/2020 22:30

Isabel/Isobel is nicer than Isabelle imo. All are preferable to Poppy.

len1234 · 24/07/2020 22:33

I really like Isabelle, though I prefer Isabella. If I'm being brutally honest, poppy makes me think of someones grandfather or when people refer to farting as a pop off. Though I think those associations could just be me.

sel2223 · 24/07/2020 23:11

I love the name Poppy but I just don't think it goes with your surname: Poppy Baker

I always do the 'say it fast 5 times' challenge to see how well a name flows and this one is a struggle

DanniArthur · 24/07/2020 23:17

My DD is Isabelle so I'm maybe biased but I love it. It's a lovely name and goes far better with Baker (IMO) It may be 'popular' but I've only met a handful of Isabelle or Isabellas and its hasnt been a issue or put me off the name.

DanniArthur · 24/07/2020 23:19

Although I will admit the nickname Izzy will be used by most people. I quite liked it but wanted to call her Belle as a nickname until she went to nursery and was Izzy from then on

ODFOx · 24/07/2020 23:20

I was going to say Isobel right up until you said that the middle name was Achilea.
Achileas or Achilles might be a family name down the male line but you've strayed into fantasy with Achilea as a girls' name.
Have you considered Balonz?

midsomermurderess · 24/07/2020 23:38

They both feel a bit tired.

CostaCosta · 24/07/2020 23:53

Poppy Baker is just so lovely!

achickencalledberyl · 25/07/2020 00:00

Not poppy. It's just not an adult name - won't last the distance.

Isabelle is nice but over used.

With name like baker you need something more unusual.

daisypond · 25/07/2020 06:14

I know two adult Poppys. It’s a flower name, like any other. It’s no more twee than Lily or Ivy or other plants than also happen to end in Y.

Daffodils6097346 · 25/07/2020 20:13

Isabel (prefer this spelling) is beautiful, classic and yes popular, but for a reason.

Poppy is nice and cutesy, but it doesn’t stand up against a name like Isabel.

Grufallosfriends · 25/07/2020 20:36

I prefer Isabel (ISAbel) over Isabelle (isaBELLE). The latter sounds nice in French but not in English!

I don't like Poppy at all! It sou like Poppett or Poopy Blush

ButterflyOfFreedom · 26/07/2020 23:57

Poppy

Oneandabean · 27/07/2020 14:53

I have an Isabelle so I’m biased but I love it. It’s the only spelling of it that looks right to me.

I like Poppy but it’s the name of my dog and a lot of people where I live also have dogs named Poppy so to me it’s a dogs name.

Isabelle Baker sounds really nice.

Lavenderblues · 27/07/2020 15:01

I also prefer the Isabel spelling and pronunciation.

Don't like Poppy. It sounds like a cute pet name.
