Dorothy is much more interesting.

VerityH · 20/07/2020 01:02

Elsie 👍

amusedtodeath1 · 20/07/2020 01:08

I clicked on this thread out of curiosity as I've always felt a bit cursed with my middle name, so am astonished to see the Dottie's, Dolly's and Dorothy's are getting a bit of love these days.

Looks like after 40 odd years my middle name is finally cool again.Grin. Maybe I'll start admitting to it!

blosstree · 20/07/2020 01:17

Elsie but I don't really like either. Dorothy is akin to Gladys and Doris to me

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 20/07/2020 05:14

Elsie. I don’t like Dorothy at all.

Unfollowtherules · 20/07/2020 05:17

Both my grandmothers’ names! I don’t like them at all sorry.

JoyFreeCake · 20/07/2020 05:20

Is your baby going to be born ninety and smelling of lavender?

Whatsyourflava · 20/07/2020 07:38

Elsie ❤️

sweetnosugar · 20/07/2020 08:57

Elsie! ❤️

partofyoupoursoutofme · 20/07/2020 10:27

Both lovely, but Dorothy wins for me. Only just though!

Hopefully84 · 20/07/2020 10:27

Thanks everyone.
Some of these comments made me laugh, I am definitely drawn to the old fashioned names.
Husband prefers Elsie and I love Dorothy so looks like I've got the slight advantage. 🤗
Also on the list were
Isla (so popular)
Halle
Harriet nn Hattie
Etta
Any other suggestions welcome.
Thanks again.

Could you use both and one as a middle name?

Evelyn
Elsa
Edith
Both my kids have ‘old fashioned’ names. I bloody love them!!

TeeBee · 20/07/2020 10:59

Elsie

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/07/2020 11:00

i like Etta
i love Dorothy, although i came on the thread to say Elsie

you say nn Dottie, but who will call her Dorothy?

MikeUniformMike · 20/07/2020 11:01

Dorothy without a doubt. Love Dot.
Heard Elsie screamed at an unruly DD too many times to like it.

JoyFreeCake · 20/07/2020 12:01

If you like Harriet how about Henriette/Henrietta?

RuthW · 20/07/2020 12:16

Dorothy

IndiaPlace · 20/07/2020 12:54

My family tree has similar names ( great time researching during lockdown)
Elspeth (Elsie)
Dorothea (Dot or Thea)
Audrea/Audra
Isadora (Isa or Dora)
Theodora (Theadora) ( Thea, Teddy, Dora)
Adaline (Ada)

and I love Esther, (Esti), Sydney and Ida ( can be a name in its own right or NN. for Idella.

Kellraiser · 20/07/2020 13:10

I have an Elsie, she will be 7 next week and it's just lovely and is always complimented. It has aged well with her too.

elfran · 20/07/2020 13:49

I prefer Dorothy, for the simple reason that it gives her flexibility to be Dot, Dottie, Dora or Thea at various times in her life, as well as using her full name. As somebody with a longer name (who has mainly gone by a nn my whole life) I have appreciated the ability to slip on different "skins" when it suits, say in a professional capacity, etc.

Elsie is cute but I struggle to understand its recent rise - it just seems so nicknamey and girly to me. Not that I can't see it on a grown woman, just that it's somewhat limiting compared to something like Dorothy.

MikeUniformMike · 20/07/2020 16:45

You don't need nn to do that. I use different names quite often.
I name change if I want to post something a bit outside my usual personality . Smile

FrameyMcFrame · 20/07/2020 16:49

@amusedtodeath1

Haha, my middle name is Elsie and I'm also astonished that people would want to use it!
I've never admitted to it either Confused

FrameyMcFrame · 20/07/2020 17:01

@Hopefully84 by the way, I LOVE Harriet.

SidesteppinTheRona · 21/07/2020 08:44

I love Elsie, but like many names I see on here it's actually a diminutive (for Elizabeth or Alison) rather than a proper name. I don't like this new fashion for NNs as full first names.

Dorothy seems frumpy to me.

LycraLovingLass · 21/07/2020 08:48

I love Elsie.

Dorothy is quite cute and I like Dotty for a nn but I do prefer Elsie.
