Alexander?

What do people think about this, with Alec or Alex for short? Full name will be Alexander Francis Jackson. I know it’s meant to be popular, but I can’t say I’ve ever met an Alec/Alex/Alexander in my life. Thanks Smile

Our boy is a Finlay Alexander and we call him his full middle name.
I think your choice goes well, even if he got ‘Alex’ etc for short.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 19/07/2020 12:26

Alexander is a gorgeous name.
You can’t fault it. The name Alex is strong and masculine for a man yet its pretty and elegant for a women.
DD’s BF is an Alex ,just Alex on his BC.

pontiouspilates · 19/07/2020 12:30

A classic name. I love it.

Pantheon · 19/07/2020 12:32

Lovely name

worstwitch18 · 19/07/2020 12:33

Good, solid classic name.

SidesteppinTheRona · 19/07/2020 12:49

Haha, I was going to write pretty much the same as @worstwitch18... Alexander is good, classic and solid!

You can't go wrong with such a name. The one I knew best went by Xan! But Alex, Lex, Alec (and Sandy in Scotland!) are good diminutives too.

Grufallosfriends · 19/07/2020 12:51

I know lots of male and female friends called Alex. It's quite popular as a unisex name.

Abracadabra12345 · 19/07/2020 12:53

My son is called Alexander and I still love saying it, 19 years later! We shorten it to Xander or Xand but often use the full name. I think it’s a gorgeous name!

VenusClapTrap · 19/07/2020 12:55

Never liked it. Too long and fussy. I don’t think it’s particularly popular at the moment though; I only know one child Alex and she’s female. It was their ‘boy’ name, but they ended up with girl girl twins so they used it anyway.

PhoebeSnow · 19/07/2020 13:01

Lovely name, classy, and classic, any Alexander I know are shorted to Alex . It was on our list of boys names so I am biased

MaisyMary77 · 19/07/2020 13:25

I’ve got an Alexander. We shorten it to Xander. Love it Smile

AntiHop · 19/07/2020 13:29

I love it. Especially sasha for short.

Charles1986 · 19/07/2020 16:22

@Awwlookatmybabyspider I have to disagree Alex is pretty for a girl. Alex, Sam, Chris and Charlie are all far too masculine/tomboyish for a girl imo.

@VenusClapTrap I think Alexandra is kind of tacky, like you can’t really just take a boys name, stick an “a” on the end of it and then it’s suddenly feminine imo.

Charles1986 · 19/07/2020 16:24

@AntiHop how do you get Sasha from Alexander? Can’t say I’ve heard that before.

IndecentFeminist · 19/07/2020 16:28

I've also heard Sandy as a diminutive.

I like it very much. I only know one Alexander, about 8 now. So not that common at the moment round here.

A good, solid name.

AuntieStella · 19/07/2020 16:29

Sasha is the Russian diminutive of Aleksandr, and it's a very common shortening across all of mainland Europe and also in UK

I think Alexander is a lovely name. I think I prefer Alex to Alec, but there are so many nn options, you may find a different one grows on you

FairfaxAikman · 19/07/2020 16:41

Very popular in Scotland, which was one of the reasons we ruled it out for DS but it was one of the top ones in our list.

I love it. I like names that are strong, classic but have a casual shortening that makes you think "top bloke".
Alex/Sandy is a top bloke.

avocadotofu · 19/07/2020 16:43

It's a beautiful name!
