Childs name as an adult

Can you imagine the name Romy on an adult?

Yes, because I've watched Romy and Michelle's high school reunion about 300 hundred times.

I don't think there are names that look bad on adults, just certain types of adults. Like there are some names that are too big or too cutesy for who their owner is. Like a girl named Shelby who isn't dainty and pretty, or a boy named Barnaby who isn't the cool artsy type. In those cases, the names sort of become a burden.

threeduckslittle · 16/07/2020 06:27

So a 'Romy' would need to fulfil certain characteristics to suit the name? As in too cutesy?

If you can put aside the film (!), how would you picture a Romy?

I know a Romy, she's awesome and I'm (secretly) a little bit jealous of her name! I don't think of the film when I see her as she's nothing like the character. However, I've loved the name ever since seeing the film and if I could have chosen my children's names, it would have definitely been on my list.

threeduckslittle · 16/07/2020 06:50

Thanks that is helpful!
Would you mind me asking what sort of profession she has? For example I'm kind of thinking a Romy would be artistic/creative

Yes of course, it's a beautiful name. It has a bit of a European chic vibe because of Romy Schneider but ultimately the child will make the name. Its far less cutesy than names like Poppy or Amelia.

Hopefulhen · 16/07/2020 06:53

I know a Romy in her early thirties. It’s never occurred to me that she has a child’s name! She is a nurse but currently travelling overseas. Great, ‘out there’ fashion choices.

The thing is not everyone has the same impression of a name. So I would never think of a Shelby as particularly dainty or pretty (Virtue names are more problematic in this regard, imagine a clumsy Grace or a pessimistic Hope) and as for Barnaby? My impression would be a blond, slow, rather dull and lumpy boy. Pretty much the opposite of cool, although I suppose the Hipster generation probably love it for those ironic qualities.

threeduckslittle · 16/07/2020 07:38

True, people have different impressions. What would your impression be of a Romy?

I like Romy as a nickname for Ramona 😍

TitianaTitsling · 16/07/2020 09:00

I know of a Romy who works in v corporate world.

userabcname · 16/07/2020 09:02

I have taught a very sullen and stroppy Romy so unfortunately those are my main associations with the name!

may3120 · 16/07/2020 09:36

Romy is a lovely name and I think it works fine for a child as well as an adult, much more so than all the frilly cutesy names that seem to be on trend at the moment.

Can I ask how it is pronounced? "Rommy" or "Roamy"?

RedRec · 16/07/2020 09:40

Beautiful name. I see it as classy and a bit edgy (in a good way).

BarkandCheese · 16/07/2020 09:44

I don’t think of Romy as cutsie at all, cutsie names are things like Pixie, Posey, Blossom and Dolly. Romy is more like Chloe or Phoebe.

nitsandwormsdodger · 16/07/2020 09:51

I never understood why people get so het up about a name
Just name your baby what you like as long as it's not something obviously embarrassing or with terrible connotations like hitler or Stalin it will all work out fine ,
some will love it others will not
I do not expect my children's names to be universally applauded

threeduckslittle · 16/07/2020 10:41

@nitsandwormsdodger good point, though I don't think my question is that dissimilar to most on this forum. That is a good way to think though and removes some pressure.

Sorry, off topic I know but why couldn't you choose your children's names? Isn't that one of the benefits of having children?

I'd assume adoption.

123Dancewithme · 16/07/2020 14:38

I know a Romy short for Romina

Yes, due to adoption. Smile

@ OP

I think she has a big standard office job, but she does give off an artistic vibe! Very laid back, with a messy style that just works.

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2020 21:01

Will you still like it then?

sibbys · 16/07/2020 22:00

Cool name!!
I imagine an artsy, beautiful woman with that name

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/07/2020 22:06

Why does it matter how people would picture someone with that name? It doesn't mean that's what the person will be like at all. Your personality doesn't come from your name.

DappledThings · 17/07/2020 08:53

Those aren't the impressions I have of either of those names. Shelby is a middle-aged C&W singer. Confident and cool and in possession of a ton of excellent relationship advice.

Barnaby is an over-priveliged oik in his early 20s who wears coloured shirts with white collars and has a job in Daddy's stock broking firm that he got with no effort on his own part.
