What do you think about the name Sana?

I would pronounce it Sah-na or Saana (long “a” sound) .

In Arabic “Sana” means brilliance ( I am not Arabic but DH is) but Sana is also a name of a river back where I was born, so it pretty much covers both basis.

What do you think?
Thanks!

Sorry, me too - first thought is it's too close to 'sanitary'. It's such a common contraction for everything to do with loos/periods etc - so Saniflow, sanpro, etc. It is pretty but I wouldn't use it.

worstwitch18 · 16/07/2020 14:19

I quite like it.

I didn't think of sanitary items until other posters mentioned it and I don't really think it's very similar, especially with the long 'a.'

I like that is has significance to both of you.

WTFisthisabout · 16/07/2020 14:45

How does your DH pronounce it/spell it in Arabic? سناء (brilliance) has a glottal stop at the end, which is hard for English speakers to pronounce.

It makes me think of Yemen.

I think Sana is lovely! The woman I knownwith this name is from Kazakhstan.

IveSeenThings · 16/07/2020 15:06

The two little girls I know named Sana are both British Asian, one of Indian heritage, one of Pakistani.

Lovely name, I know a half kurdish girl called Zana but I think I prefer it with an 's', it sounds softer.

NoMoreFlowers · 16/07/2020 15:32

It's a brand of incontinence pants

I think its lovely although it makes me think of the spas at Center Parcs which are called Aqua Sana

Thank you all for the lovely responses. I do get the association with "sanitary", although it hasn't crossed my mind until some of you have pointed it out. 🙂

A pp has brought a valid point about pronounciation of the name Sana by an Arabic speaker. My husband would pronounce "Sana" as "Sana'a", which I can also say, which is not a problem.

However, I do prefer Sana with a longer first a (Saana) as per name of the river back home. To me, it sounds soft and delicate.

Thinking about all this I am realising that it would be bizzare calling the child by two completely different sounding names. 😆😆😆

Maybe my husband can get used to my way of pronounciation on the account that some people (including my family) would find it difficult to pronounce the name Sana with a proper Arabic accent.

We shall see! Again thank you everyone for your input!

I have a British Pakistani colleague called this. She pronounces it “Sunna”. It’s a gorgeous name.

DoTheMaccaroni · 16/07/2020 19:34

So pretty! I love it Smile

LadyFuchsiaGroan · 16/07/2020 19:36

I love the Dutch name Sanne, it is such a pretty name.

IckleBear · 16/07/2020 20:00

Makes me think of sahne which is said similar, it's cream in German.

sibbys · 16/07/2020 20:02

It's a lovely name. A really popular tv show from Norway ("skam") has a lead role called Sana and she is amazing. Cool, feminine and pretty name.

Buttercup54321 · 17/07/2020 23:55

sanitizer,
Sanitary towel.
Cassandra?

Allmyeye · 18/07/2020 00:43

My first thought was sanitary towel.

Mine too I‘m afraid.

brababab · 18/07/2020 00:44

I thought of sanitary products too

Scottishflower · 21/07/2020 18:53

Really pretty. X

GaraMedouar · 21/07/2020 19:00

Sorry - I immediately thought sanitary too.

itsjakeandamy · 21/07/2020 19:20

I really like it.
I would assume it was pn how you said - easy to say and spell but really pretty.
I don't think it matters at all that it's Anas backwards - that's not even a word.

Emmmie · 22/07/2020 12:45

Okay, the incontinence pants win! Sana is off the table😂😂😂

Thanks for your comments everyone. We may go with Leila. Works in Bosnian, Arabic and English.

I like Sana and Leila :) Nice choices! Could always spell as Sanna is you want to avoid the incontinence pads connotation?
