Hello, as above really? I like a name that means 'blind' DH & I feel a bit strange about it but love the name...would it bother you?

Does it mean blind in another language? If you love it, use it as its unlikely anyone would know the true meaning. I cant imagine what the name is though and does sound odd!

If someone asks why you chose it though, I'd say something like: we named him after uncle so and so, we saw it in a book, it reminded us of holidays in X, rather than is means blind!!!

Nope, I couldn’t care less. I think I know the name you are considering, and it’s beautiful. And blind isn’t necessarily an altogether negative concept, anyway. My daughter’s name means ‘sea of bitterness’, I think, ha ha! It will have no impact on her life, just as the meaning behind mine had no impact on mine.

Cecily? I loved the name too but wasn't sure about the meaning...

That’s funny my daughters name means bitter too. I say go for it OP. I don’t put any stock in what my own name means - do you?

We really liked the name Claudia but it means ‘lame’ and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to use it so I know what you mean.

HappyDinosaur · 15/07/2020 20:57

If you love the name then I think the meaning is irrelevant personally.

DramaAlpaca · 15/07/2020 21:01

Cecilia? Beautiful name, as is Claudia, but I personally wouldn't use them because of their meanings. Amelia is another one. I don't think most people would either know or notice though and it's more important that you love the name.

It can be a positive thing too. I chose DS3's middle name specifically for its meaning.

DaisyChainsForever · 15/07/2020 21:02

i've never asked anyone the meaning of their child's name. I honestly don't think it matters.

WorriedButterfly · 15/07/2020 21:03

Thank you for the responses! And encouragement. Yes the name is Cicely (which is an English Victorian name, I think Cecily is the US version - they are different in sound too one is sis the other is ses). I like Claudia too @Fedup21 but had the same feeling, it is so silly, if I just picked a word I like as many people do I wouldn't be at all bothered if the meaning!

I love knowing the meanings behind names and always intended to name my child something that has a lovely meaning.
In the end we chose a name that we love but it doesn't have a good meaning at all.

It seems that not many people are bothered about the meaning and are more interested in the sound of the name itself and whether it 'fits'. My family hate what I named my baby anyway so they certainly don't care about the meaning!

Clairey844 · 15/07/2020 21:18

Think of all your friends-how many of their names do you know the meaning of?

I really wouldn't discount a name you like because of the meaning.

My little girl's name is a Maori name and depending on where you look it is said to mean swamp flower 😂😂 although other places say it means silver fern and flax flower. We gave her the name because we loved it.
