Primrose or Penelope?

We just can’t decide between these names! Our surname begins with P and we’d love for her name to be alliterative! I think my personal preference is Primrose which surprises me as it’s so girly!

Primrose shortenings- Prim, Rose, Posy

Penelope shortenings- Penny, Nel

Primrose is the name of the widow of the Dr that killed his elderly patients. It sounded distinctly odd when I first heard it. I love the plant but don’t think it makes a good name — nice name for a cuddly pet.
Penelope, on the other hand has real class. The several I have known have been lovely and very popular.

Love Primrose

Penelope is nice but I hate Penny. I would shorten to Nellie.

Penelope.

Primrose sounds like a young adult novel character to me.

Penelope is really nice.

Thank you for your input 😊

I didn’t realise Primrose would be so contentious! Xx

How do you feel about Persephone, OP?

That's definitely the best 'like Penelope, but more radical' option.

Sephy for short probably.

SumAndSubstance · 13/07/2020 18:46

Sorry, OP, I am not a fan of Primrose either. I quite like Penelope, but agree that Persephone is cooler!

VenusClapTrap · 13/07/2020 19:43

Love Primrose.

Penelope. The girls name I never used (we had boys)

Orphlids · 13/07/2020 21:39

I’m afraid I don’t like Primrose either. I know a little Primrose, who is known as Prim. Her parents decided she’d be known as Prim before she was even born. I can’t understand it really - why would anyone want to be named after what is generally considered to be a negative trait? Even the full name Primrose sounds so stuffy. I’d prefer to be named something that sounds more adventurous.

Penelope is great. It’s not my usual taste, as it is a little flouncy, but I just love it. I can imagine Penelope going off to study in Paris for a year, and her exciting, rather posh friends cooing “Penelope, daaaaaarling!” I think Penelope will have a good deal more fun than Primrose.

rachelrainbow · 13/07/2020 22:55

Ahh gutted so many people hate Primrose but good to know now! I know the saying ‘prim and proper’ but never used/heard ‘prim’ being used to describe someone 😬.

Too much Hunger Games for me 😂

Please don’t inflict Primrose on a baby, it’s awful. Stuffy, dull, ugly, prim.

Penelope is ok. Nel for short is cool.

What about
Portia
Perri
Polly

Florrieboo · 14/07/2020 04:28

Primrose is one of my daughters middle names so that gets my vote. She is 8 and wishes it was her first name.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 14/07/2020 04:57

I'm not keen on either buy Penelope is pretty bad. It makes me think of some sort of dowdy headmistress. So primrose.

rachelrainbow · 15/07/2020 15:16

Perhaps I need to go back to the drawing board 😂
