Would the popularity of Isla put you off?

Today we found out we are expecting a little girl, we are over the moon! We’ve started thinking about names. Middle name will be Patricia after partner’s grandmother.
We love Isla, however we realise it’s very popular! Not sure whether that’s off putting..
Any other suggestions are welcome! Other names I like but cannot use:
Esme
Camilla (Millie for short)
Mila
Florence
Rosie

Isla is a beautiful name. And if that is your favourite then I would go for it.

Some people choose some questionable (even sometimes made up!) names to be 'different'. I'd much rather opt for a name that clearly pretty much everyone loves and so top 10 wouldn't bother me.

Piggywaspushed · 12/07/2020 14:41

Isla is definitely a Scottish name. I went to school with a few , and then there was Isla St Clair. The Aussie actress, Isla Fisher, has some Scots connections.

The main thing that puts me off names like this is hearing English people pronounce them. It's like nails down a blackboard to me! Orla (I know not Scottish), Catriona, Lachie, even Hamish, all make me want to buy earplugs. And Calum with two ls.

Sorry!

Isla is a pretty name notwithstanding!

I thought Skylar/er was an anglicisation of the Dutch given names Schuyler/Schuylar.

mummy2myJJ · 12/07/2020 15:37

When I was pregnant in 2017 I liked the name Isla and it was on our list but the popularity of the name really put me off... I had a boy in the end so it was a pointless anyway! We also had Everleigh, Penelope and Wynter on our girls list xx

Iwalkinmyclothing · 12/07/2020 15:47

Not at all. My last child was born in 2014 and had he been a girl would have been Sofia, which I believe was the most popular name in the world at the time for girl babies. I absolutely do not care whether the names I give my children are popular or not.

MikeUniformMike · 12/07/2020 15:49

Sorry, my Hmm was in response to Skylar not Isla.
Isla is from Islay.

sibbys · 12/07/2020 15:57

Yes! Way too popular.
Penelope nn Penny?
Francesca nn Frankie?
Edie?
Elspeth nn Elsie?
Martha?
Alice?

It doesn’t matter whether it’s popular. Always choose the name you like best - nothing else matters.

mathanxiety · 12/07/2020 18:23

Skyler (Skylar) is a corruption of the Dutch surname Schuyler (as in The Schuyler Sisters). It became modestly popular in the US at the same time as the names Saylor and Taylor did, back in the 90s. The attraction of it as a first name in the US tied into the WASPy name trend that was developing at that time.

Wow. I wish my parents had cared about popularity. I hate having a popular name. That's a very selfish attitude imo!

Parker231 · 12/07/2020 20:56

Why is it selfish for parents to give their DC’s the name they like best? Better than giving them their second best?

AlecOrAlonzo · 12/07/2020 21:03

The river Isla is in Moray. It flows through the town of Keith. It has been extremely popular name in Scotland for a long time. I would say it's a classic name in Scotland. I wouldn't bother about popularity or not of a name. If you like it then use it.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/07/2020 21:08

Yes it's a classic in Scotland, I adore it since I went to school with an Isla, we're now 39 so not too modern a name. It's one of my favourites, but I'd be wary to use it because of how popular it is now!!

Mummytea24 · 12/07/2020 21:13

I have an Isla and not met another one in the last 7 years.

guidedogneeded · 12/07/2020 21:19

My niece is Isla, I've not really met any others and everyone comments when we are out with her about how beautiful her name is.
On the other hand there are two "Wolfs" in my dd's small primary school. I'm sure both sets of parents thought they were being unique when naming them but they are known as big wolf and little wolf (no joke)

123Dancewithme · 12/07/2020 23:12

Yes, it’s boring to me now.

IKEA888 · 12/07/2020 23:14

if you love it go for it.
we did this with a v popular name. she s the only one on a school of 250+

HD98 · 13/07/2020 14:23

I love the name but the popularity would probably put me off, personally, especially living in Scotland. But if it doesn't put you off then go for it! It's not as if it's not still a beautiful name.
Suggestions... I know one little girl named Aila (Pronounced ay-luh but also sometimes eye-luh), Vaila, Freya, Ailsa, Willa, Iris, Eloise, Elodie?

Zxr12 · 03/11/2021 18:50

What did you go for ?
I’m pregnant now and we have the same taste in names my list is pretty much exactly the same

spookysoul · 03/11/2021 21:22

I’d choose Patricia as her first name over any of the others on your list. I find ‘old lady’ names on little girls adorable.

SallyWD · 04/11/2021 13:42

I do love the name Isla. I love the gentle sound of it however I just know too many. I don't go for names that are extremely unusual or "unique" but I am put off by names that are everywhere.

Nellesbelles · 05/11/2021 15:31

Yes, I loved Isla for my DD but didn't use it for that reason.
Some others similar but less popular (on my area at least)
Iona
Orla
Lorna
Emmy
Neve
Macie
Belle/Bella
Ailee (there are different spellings to this name including a Scottish one if you like Scottish names)
Josie
Olive
Annie
Connie

Gottahavehighhopes · 05/11/2021 15:33

Least with a popular name, you know other people like it too.

I have an uncommon name and would have preferred being one of a few in my year verses people having no idea of my name

smokey998 · 05/11/2021 15:39

We've had 7 ISLA bikes, that would put me off.

mogtheexcellent · 05/11/2021 15:42

Only one in DDs school (360 kids). Depends on where you live on how popular it is.

As for the isla bikes comment. My daughter is a mattress. I dont think people care.
