One long name, one short name

Just musing...

Would you find it strange if one sibling had a shorter name (e.g. Eve, Grace) and the other had a longer name (Madeleine, Alexandra, Francesca)?

Not at all.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/07/2020 06:59

If I was the namer I would try and find a longer bc name for the short name.

I”d find it a bit strange, but not the end of the world.

No. My best friend growing up had a 3 syllable name. Her sister had 2 and her brother had 1.

My DC both have 3 syllable names.
Their step siblings both have 2 syllables.
One of their half siblings has a 2 syllable name. The other 2 have hyphenated names. One is 5 syllables in total. One is 3. Actually I do think that's a bit odd because the youngest 2 have such a different

Sorry hit send.

Have such a different style of name to their older siblings.

DappledThings · 11/07/2020 07:51

No, I wouldnt think anything of that

foxtiger · 11/07/2020 14:58

It's not something I would do myself but I don't find it that strange, especially if the general style of the names was similar. I mean all the ones mentioned in the OP have a similar sort of classic feel - I'd be more surprised to see Alexandra or Madeleine alongside a modern or surnamey name, like Jade or Paige.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2020 15:13

On first thought I do think it's a bit strange, yes.

Then I think of me and my sibling - one of us has a one syllable name, the other a three syllable name, and as both are classic names of a similar style they actually go together quite well.

SnowdropFox · 11/07/2020 19:39

I wouldn't notice tbh.

daisypond · 11/07/2020 19:51

I think it’s fine. I think style of name being in sync is more important. One of my DC has a one-syllable name, another has three syllables.

Agar58 · 11/07/2020 20:39

Nope. Different people, whatever tickles your pickle

Anappleaday1 · 11/07/2020 22:20

Definitely not an issue. Agree with pps that the style of names would be more important.

DelurkingAJ · 11/07/2020 23:24

DSis has three syllables, I have one. Inevitably DSis got a nickname that Was one syllable. But it’s never even occurred to me that it was odd that I had a much shorter given name. Both are classic names, I think if they weren’t I might have wondered why at some point.
