Due a little boy in September. I was wondering if anyone who works with small children could give me some popular names in your area to avoid..

Struggling to find the perfect name for our boy.

Thank you

Every other baby boy round here seems to be called Arthur or Theodore/Theo/Teddy.

FightMilkTM · 06/07/2020 14:16

Theo / Teddy - I feel like I know hundreds
Other than that: Arthur, Freddy, Alfie, Noah, Finley, Harry are all popular

Phthalo · 06/07/2020 14:43

Oh also know a few Tobys and Hugos and Finns!

Poppydaisies · 06/07/2020 14:55

Theo/Teddie, Alfie, Archie, Finn, Freddie, Eddie, Arthur, Oliver, Tom, Harry, Leo are amongst the most popular boys names here. It can be a PITA when they need a surname to know who is meant, there are just too many of the same names...!

Another downside of a trendy fashionable name is that it inevitably falls out of fashion and quickly starts to sound dated.

Poppydaisies · 06/07/2020 15:09

Too unusual can be a PITA. Makes you too memorable and easy to find.

That's the whole point of a name Grin. If you've ever set up your own business it's very helpful if potential customers can easily find you.

Planterspots · 06/07/2020 16:15

Around here there are a lot of;
Theo, Finley, Arlo, Leo, Noah, Harry, Alfie, Archie, Arthur, Teddy, Freddie
I actually think these are all really nice names! But they are popular so some to avoid if you don’t want a popular name.

MikeUniformMike · 06/07/2020 16:29

@Poppydaisies, then give the company a memorable name.

123Dancewithme · 07/07/2020 01:02

Where I live (SW) there are lots of Theo, Albie, Arlo, Teddy, Arthur, Noah, Oscar, Jude. Lots of Nathaniels as well.

Minai · 07/07/2020 14:09

Honestly I really don’t think it matters just choose a name you like. Ds1’s name was 36 in the charts the year he was born and it’s always mentioned on these threads with people saying there are hundreds of them everywhere. In 3 years of going to toddler groups I have only met 1 other child with the same name. If you pick an unusual name you may find there are several in your child’s year group anyway and you’ll be even more annoyed if you’ve gone to the effort of finding a more unusual name!

Poppydaisies · 07/07/2020 14:36

If you pick an unusual name you may find there are several in your child’s year group

Much more unlikely though! If a name is only used about 20 times per year it's extremely unlikely to bump into more than one in his year group.

MikeUniformMike · 07/07/2020 16:50

Not necessarily, if the name is from a tv show or something, you might get more than one set of parents liking it and thinking it's new and different.

My sibling chose unusual names for their DC, and neighbours (not NDN) used the names.

Kaiisaclay · 07/07/2020 19:00

Isaac
Zachary
Arthur
Theo/dore

It's difficult to say, as names have a fair amount of regional variance.

However, for a rough idea, I'd look for a name outside the top 200, if you want a reasonable expectation of having a name to himself, at least through nursery and primary school.

I'd aim for a name in the top 200-400 range. So that you end up with something that's recognisable to people, but not super-common.

SingingWren · 10/07/2020 13:04

I'm about to have an Arthur, I know it's considered popular now but I don't know any other babies or children so who cares! I love the name and will continue to love it whether my boy has zero or 4 other Arthur's in his future school class

Mumtumwobble · 10/07/2020 13:07

Dd goes to nursery with 3 Max’s and they’ll all go to reception together in September. Other popular names include; Teddy, Harry, Theo and Leo

emilybrontescorsett · 10/07/2020 17:29

I think all the 'ee' names such as
Freddie
Frankie
Archie
Alfie
Ronnie
Reggie
Also the R names
Roman
Rowan
Rowan
I think it's easier to have a popular classic name than a popular unique type name iyswim.
So better to be a Harry than a Rowan if there are the same number of each, that's just my opinion.

Louise0701 · 10/07/2020 17:35

Ronnie Reggie Freddie Teddy Harry Theo Arthur George Noah Charlie Archie Oscar

I thought it would depend on area but it seems the name should I’ve listed are popular with most others pps.

My boys names both end in a Y and are “nickname” names but we’ve never met any others. They’re both in the top 100 for the past few years. We have met boys with the long version of their names but they don’t use my sons names as nicknames.

CurtainWitcher · 10/07/2020 17:38

Tyler
Jayden/Jaiden
Harry
Alfie
Luke/Lucas
Charlie
Kai
Kyle

Grufallosfriends · 11/07/2020 07:34

Theo, Noah, Alfie, Archie, Arthur,, George, Jack, Finn, Zachary, Oliver, Harry, are all very common with several per school year.

Pantheon · 11/07/2020 07:37

The under 3s I know:

Arthur
Noah
Alfie
Theodore
Jesse
Oscar
Oliver

ILoveStickers · 11/07/2020 07:42

I know two babies called Austin and two called Dante! Don't think either are particularly popular, but it's funny how these things go.

Otherwise, I've heard Archie, Alfie, Arthur, Thomas and Edward around at baby groups etc. (East Anglia)

whattodo2019 · 11/07/2020 07:47

This must be regional as half the names on here I have never heard anyone being called near me...
Corey... no coreys at our school
Liam - no Liams
Caiden- no...

We do have a few Theo's, Noah's, Charlie's, ....

Good luck! My son has an usual yet traditional name and he loves being fairly unique.

Twickerhun · 11/07/2020 07:49

Arlo and Archie and Theo / teddy/ Toby here Cute names

cptartapp · 11/07/2020 08:16

Anything ending in ie.
And Noah.

Shelbe34 · 11/07/2020 11:14

So strange as where I live I have never actually heard an Archie, Stanley, Finn..

Not sure if it is just different regions though..
Harry, Jack, Teddy are more popular here
